Another BD Trip is in the books! This trip was a great time, despite the fact that fishing wasn't amazing and the wind was blowing harder than any other BD Trip we hosted this season. Thanks to a great crew and a dedicated group of anglers, we managed to scratch 24 Dorado when most other boats in the area came home with a handful of fish, at best.
For those who are familiar with the sportboats, you probably are wondering why the Pacifica ran a full day. The Pacifica is a multi day boat, usually trips on this boat are Overnight - 3.5 Day trips. I was able to find a gap in their schedule to get this trip planned because this is my personal favorite boat in the fleet. I used to work for Captain Andrew on the Prowler, and I still occasionally fill in on deck on the Pacifica. Andrew runs a great operation, he makes sure his crew is on it at all hours of the day.
This trip, Captain Andrew was off and we had Captain Dan (Dano) running the trip. On deck was Ryan (Cobra) & Cameron. The cook, Nick, held down the galley. This was my first time meeting Cameron, but I have known all the others for years. Cameron was great, he meshed with the crew very well and worked hard to help all anglers get fish when the opportunity arose. Dano, Cobra and Nick killed it as well, they have all been on the boat for multiple years and know how to get the job done.
The Fishing:
I was stoked to see that the boat was getting bait before we even got to the dock. With a 6 AM departure, the crew saved us heaps of time by waking up at 4 AM and getting bait. All our anglers were signed in on time, and we left the dock at about 6:05 AM. On time departures are CLUTCH on full day trips.
Captain Dano and I were in contact all week, we both knew the fishing was going to be tough and the weather would play a factor, but Dano is not afraid of a challenge so we pointed South to find local patties and/or tuna. Without passports, we were limited. He set for just outside of South Island and we worked our way west all day.
We dealt with shitty water in the first few hours of the day. First patty we saw around 9 AM was dry. We marked a few schools of tuna, saw a few boils, but no dice. The water was green and just below 70, as we went west more toward the 371 it cleared up and warmed up. Around 10:30 AM we had our first patty with dorado on it. We hooked 4 and landed 2. I hooked one and gave it to my younger sister and she landed her first ever dodo! After that, we stopped on multiple patties throughout the day, with 3-8 fish caught on each.
The amount of fish was impressive. Free swimmers deep under the boat, good schools of dorado. No yellowtail mixed in, these schools were 100% dodo. The grade of fish was small, a term I heard years ago is "necktie" dorado because they are about the size of a necktie. But in the end, 24 dorado was a hell of a day for how tough the elements were. Other boats in the area had 1-2 fish. Thanks to a hard working crew, we were able to put together a decent day of fishing!
Big thanks to everyone who came out! I love having fun groups, plenty of jokes, beers, and new friendships were formed over the course of 12 hours. If you haven't had the chance to come out on any BD sponsored trips, stay tuned! We are hoping to get a 1.5 or 2 day trip scheduled on the Pacifica before this season ends. If not, we hope to see you on one of our trips next year!
Shoutout to Mike Muto from SUBMISSION FISHING! Muto came out, brought everyone jigs, and fished hard all day long. Super stoked to fish with Mike again. There is nothing quite like supporting a local business, especially when the product kicks ass!
Lastly, thanks to the Pacifica crew! Highly recommend fishing the Pacifica, the boat is great and the crew works as hard as possible to put you on fish!
