Personally I have never seen one caught. How do people typically catch them, I assume they are pretty rare. What kind of a fight do they put up?

Drop a sinker rig on a paddy. I fished the Tribute with a guy who did that on a stop after saying he wanted an Opah. And caught an Opah on that very same paddy. I could not believe it!!!!!

Tie on a heavy jig and snag the one swimming under the boat. At least that's what we joked about last time we saw one in the water

They eat both bait and jigs. And they fight pretty good, too. Not as strong as a tuna of the same size, but they use that flat body very well to resist.

Caught mine on a heavy jig. We were out in the middle of nowhere fishing for BF.

I just got off the boat from this trip. Craig used a sinker rig with a sardine. Deep drop. I think we were about 35-40 miles southeast of SCI but I’m not totally sure. We also got a 330# on the kite. Unbelievable trip.

    Awesome!

I was on the o-95 a couple years back. Rick stops on some deep meter marks in the dark. We all drop flat falls and one lucky angler hooks up. Fights it for 45 mins or so then passes it to the crew to finish. We all assumed it'd be a #100+ BFT. I'm still fishing when I hear the crew yell OPAH!!!!!

Pretty sick even just to witness it. I got a chunk too :)

I’m packing the weapons, hope we get a chance to use them. I don’t think it’s overkill to have a Mak16SEa with 80 and 100 lb Premier on a solid 100 lb rod, UC76 Viper. Use that with a sinker and a bait. And an Avet EX30W with marked, measured spectra with a 130 lb top shot for those FlatFalls.

    Ken’s trip 10/23. Whoo Hooo!

The sinker rig worked well in the morning. I used an 8 ounce that I glow-painted and attached with a rubber band but others had just plain sinkers attached in the same fashion..both were equally successful. Flylined baits with a smaller sardine definitely took over as the day progressed. I would guesstimate that of all the bluefin that were caught on flatfalls, 80% of them were on the 150g (chartreuse/white was the combo that seemed to work the best). A few yellowfin were caught on snipers, poppers didn’t work even though we had fish boiling around the boat almost constantly, but I seem to remember a few fish landed on heavy iron.

Sorry, forgot to add that nothing over 40# was getting bit if you were flylining a bait. Even the flat falls only worked on 60# and lighter.
