Offshore One mark one fish

Took off SD bay Tuesday morning with half a scoop of mixed chovie and dean.
Stiff west wind and mixed swell made for an uncomfortable ride south.
Checked the pens for nada.
Started to work east around mid morning and marked one single fish about 3 miles east of the pens and hooked up on the 80lb sinker rig with 5/0 circle hook, should have been an easy fight, except the reel handle broke off 5 minutes in and we had to basically hand line the fish in.
Took about an hour but we decked it, guessing low to mid 90s
Fish was stuffed with partially digested red crabs

A light frames reel isn’t meant to turn the handle when fishing 80lb and a heavy drag. Been a known issue but that wasn’t the intended and still isn’t the suggested use of a fathom unless it’s all ya got.

I agree Penn makes a solid product.

If anyone is concerned about their stock handle, the Squall T-bar handle is $23 at Mystic parts.

Nice work!! Been there! I had a reel issue during a fight with a like-size tuna before ... grabbed the trolling rod, cut the clip off the line, while one person held the line of the fish (with a glove on!), we quickly stripped off some extra line off the broken reel, tied it to the trolling rod line and then finished the fight! Success!!
