You don’t have a college degree in this field do you? If not you’re just guessing. I have been fishing long range for 35 years. We don’t kill the peanut size tuna. We release them. Now the big boats with nets. That’s a different story than the long range boats have no control over. Think before you post stupid facts.

Internet on the boat ruined the whole reason you go. You use to be able to get away from it all now everyone stares at their phones and worries about whats going on in the world . Really counter productive

We know from the Tagging data how these fish move. One of the consequences of the closures is the targeting of fish we otherwise never use to. Lately there has been an extreme tendency to exaggerate fish size. Most of this yellowfin are much smaller. Many of those ridge fish are 15 to 25 pounds. Yellowfin are a very fast growing fish it only takes 5 years to reach cow size. The Captains hate the slaughter of non game size fish but have pressure from paying customers so boat limits of small stuff is the norm. The lower banks Clarion and Hurricane have all been void of big fish in numbers for 6 years. Fishing pressure is a very real thing. Just like when the wahoo have a week off at Alijos or when Lupe opened back up after being closed for years

I agree on the overfishing. A few years ago we were heading down to HB and were very excited to be getting closer to starting to fish. Then on the horizon, we started to see black dots and many of them. As we got closer we saw at least 6 seiners and one boat was leaving and passed us and waved at us.

Don't feed the trolls.

For everyone else - some very rough calculations show that a single siener, in one week, can wrap more tonnage of fish (500 tons) than the whole longe range fleet catches in a year. Like i said, very rough calculations, so if the whole sd fleet has a banner year, it might be 2 weeks of a single siener. (Etc).

Just want to put it in perspective.

So… peanut tuna to cows. How old is a cow. Long trips are not about killing peanut tuna at all. That is why the long trips do not start to fish until they get into the lower zone.Guess I am spoiled but I let go all the footballs on the shorter trips.
BTW I like your name, Dr. Zing Pow.

Been on trips that we only gaff the cows.

Save you the trouble to look it up. Yellowfin live up to 6-7 years and the females can reproduce at 2 years old and can reproduce all year. The cows (200# plus) are all male and rarely school but separate. They feed on smaller tuna.

So, you’re a real downer, I’m pretty sure your glass has never been half full.

A very wise and experienced captain told us once, the advice he got from his father. “Son, when it comes to the warm water fish like Skipjack and Yellowfin, no matter how many you catch, you’ll never overfish the ocean.”

You don’t seem to relate any personal experience with this topic but there’s no shortage of negativity coming from you. Having a good internet connection is priceless on these boats, no matter how far they travel. If a passenger chooses not to take advantage of the signal, doesn’t use his devices, his choice, not yours.

Traveling up the line in the normal uphill battle but not too bad. Naps are in order today and movies are in full swing. Tomorrow I will break my gear down. Today’s a little snotty to do so. Warm blue skies but the spray of the boat chugging uphill keeps everyone inside. Until then over and out.

Not everyone goes long range for the same reason. Everyone has a different perspective and life, how about you go on your trip and worry about why you are there and you let everyone else figure out how they would like to enjoy their trip.

Most of those seiners down there at HB are wrapping skippies or smaller tuna bunched up in schools, that’s where the money is. They’ll wrap big ones but normally the volume isn’t there to make it worth the set. Also big fish don’t pack well in the holds, too much air space between fish where smaller fish pack better so the get more tonnage per trip. At times that bank can be corroded with schools of skipjack. The yellowfin usually isn’t worth the trouble to wrap but the skipjack are money. I’ve seen them there several times a mile or 2 off the bank looking for skipjack. The boats that work the ridge are a different ball game, the tuna and small and bunched up, easy pickings

I agree. But, I've seen some big fish in their nets while they were bring them on deck. I think it's what ever they can get into their nets.

It’s our last day out here on the 16 day independence trip. Boy what a time everyone had We slayed the tuna and wahoo. Weather was up and down with a day or two of rain and wind. Didn’t seem to matter to the fish they were eating. The weather is absolutely beautiful this morning. Flat calm seas like a lake is what’s going on right now. I wanted to take the time to thank Roger our charter master and a big shout out to the stellar crew on the independence. Without the crew’s help many of these fish wouldn’t have been on the boat. At times we had 15 fish going and 5 or 6 in one corner of the boat. The crew separated all the tangles and we didn’t lose a fish. Amazing Indy crew. Thank you. This concludes the on the water Roger’s 16 day. Hope everyone enjoyed it.

Hey dr ping plow you have the traits of someone who is either super ignorant and clueless or someone who every time they open their mouth nothing but horse shit falls out or you are just stupid. You can’t fix stupid. I think you have all three of these traits. I hope I never end up on the same boat as you no matter what length trip
