Went out of Dana Point with my new fishing buddy Tunaslam. We headed south to OS and about 10 miles out. Pretty smooth in the morning, however overcast so we really didn’t see any paddys to stop on. Saw a few puddlers here and there which we thew a few baits and chunk with nothing on the meter. Moved on and repeated a few times.

Worked out way up to the inside of the 267, SE about 3 miles where a guy on 72 said it was happening. We settled down by three boats with one hanging. Nothing for us after about an hour of patience. Wind got nasty but we worked up to the 267 where there was a few boats with nothing going.

With the following seas worked our way back to the point. About 3-4 miles out we spotted a few Tuna puddling and drop some live ones. About 4 minutes later I get picked up on my old school gear. Penn 501 with a Tru 4x with 25lb. 25 or so minutes later after a couple looks at my boat. Tunaslam nails a nice gaff head shot. Nothing wasted.

Guys say I don't smile. This is as close as I get.

The BF were in a frinzy chasing bait a few weeks ago, now it seems like they may be more spread out and meandering. I think patience will be the key rather than chasing these fish this weekend.

I really enjoyed your company Tunaslam and we will get them next time.

Good luck Gents!

Thanks again LJ for the ride, boy it is tough fishing out there now! Conditions play such a big role, not finding any kelps due to bumpy seas and overcast skies hurt our effort. The last-minute save made our day, after many hours of staring at the sea for little! The puddlers picked up our spirits at times yet left us hanging, as they sunk out so quickly.

That was quite a fight between man and beast. That BF was one feisty tuna, refusing to cooperate time and time again. Your skills at fishing certainly turned the tide in your favor. Well done.

Way to go LJ and Cory! Nice grade tuna!

With Mr Visser on the boat, you brought more experience with you than most of us combined. That dude is a fish magnet.

    Thanks for sharing gents!

GREAT REPORT!! You gotta sweet double hook up there. A nice tuna & a new fishing buddy!!!
    I have 2 questions though...
    #1- which one fought harder?
#2- which one did you fillet first?

    FUN TRIP

See, that's what cool about the BD community. Yah Rubbberhook2, that is the lucky reel handle you gave me when I purchased the flying gaff and trolling pole from YOU! Flying gaff is the only item still waiting for use, the others have already connected with fish.

Two Trulines (both were fished this trip and one hooked up) purchased this year from OP Rick U

Everything is in good hands . . .

I now have no trepidation fishing my Tranx 400 with a Ghost Popper anymore. With maybe 5lbs of drag and a littlle thumbing on the line of the 501, this fish was mine, eventually. The spool of the 501 only lost the top third of line. They are mean, but I am still meaner, so far.
