Well, if you read those threads you will find that I for one have been known to rip such flamers too...:D.

I think the give and take is useful, usually those that see the bigger picture understand the angler's frustration (but guilty of arm chair quarterbacking) and the hard job of the boats to always be successful (but they are not infallible). Both sides, as it were.

Welcome to BD. You must be new.

Calling a captain a douche and or calling out a landing for someone catching a legal fish is counter-intuitive. That is what they do for a living...and is the only thing that separates them from being a ferry boat captain. I mention the ferry boat thing as maybe you should stick to riding them? Seems like a smooth ride with a group of travelers gawking at sea lions, gulls and pelicans might insulate you from seeing any fish die. Another thought would be to include this site in your list of places to not visit again in the future. We, fisherman, won't miss you.

    Beautiful creatures they are.
I would rather release that take one, but, I have taken them and they are quite delicious. ESPECIALLY THE BELLIES.

Maybe the angler wanted to keep the marlin ?

But, a responsible captain and crew could have educated him why most marlin are caught and released.. and if not going to die, why not take the high road ?

I have seen an angler kill a 200# class Black Sea bass at Guadalupe (back in the good old days when we could fish there)... we all felt he should have released it, but did not chastise him for his legal take.

    Tight lines,

    Jefff

Serious question: What makes a marlin so special? Legal take, not endangered.. I don't get it, what's the big deal?

I've had to gaff a few over the years, not by choice. Still, it's a nice fish.

I'd like to know what the original poster would do if he caught a swordfish. Would you keep it? Far more rare than a striped marlin but no one on a San Diego sportfisher would release one. I know I wouldn't.

I would bet most boats in the fleet would have released it,the Old Glory well they need all the help they can get and a boated Marlin looks good on their resume'.The guys on that boat didnt seem to excited about it landing on the deck.
