I have several Makaria’s and love them all …
Been considering purchasing a 15T …
I have a MK50,20,16,10 …
I know the 15T has a taller and narrower spool with incredible drag…
Will it hold 400#+ of 60# braided backing with a 20-30 foot top shot ?
I was considering fishing a top shot of 40-50-60# fluorocarbon?
Any ideas on what a good Calstar 775 series or a United Composite 7’6” or 8’ rod ?
What might be a good “rail rod” match for a 15T ?
I’ll be fishing the local bluefin and yellowtail …

I have an RGP76 Predator GUSA Premium upgraded rod now.
Sometimes I wished I’d purchased the RPG80 Predator…oh well.
Yeah the RPG76 has a 50-100# line rating.
l have fished it quite a bit this year … actually I hung one of those 150#+++ bluefin on it with 80# braid and a 100# top shot …
It was too much for the RPG76 Predator to handle … I couldn’t do 💩… the 15T fished with 50-60# sounds like more of an option.
Thanks for your input…
P.S. my Hokey RPG76 Predator rail rod I modified which had a 20” fore grip … it now slides down the rail with ease…
The rod next to it is an 8’ Terminator … yeah light weight rail rods.

That’s good to hear… I can live with 500 yards and a healthy top shot of either 60#-80# … if you snag a good one and they get you for 200 yards out of the gate you can always push the drag a bit … them bigger bluefin do like to get out from the boat aways…
Then turn around and haul ass back to the boat …
I’ve heard this more than once by the deck hands …
“High Gear … High Gear … High Gear” …
I have been using a longer top shot though …
I was using about 15 feet of wind on’s and when the bigger fish got closer to the boat I pulled hooks … that sucks after a long fight… unforgiving fluorocarbon… no stretch at all … so I’ve been using about 30 feet in hopes of not pulling hooks … I hate backing off the drag when you’ve got them to the boat …
Thanks for the feedback …

Your 8'0" RGP Terminator has noticeably more lift and power than the 7'6" RGP Predator. I love mine! It is paired with a Mak 15T SEa loaded with 500 yards of 65# Daiwa J-Braid and 60# fluoro leader, and it feels just right. Here is a pic of my US Terminator lifting 18# of lead, to give you a sense of the power curve.

FWIW my "Next Up" rig is a 7'6" UC Centaur paired with a Mak 16 SEa loaded with 500 yards of JB braid. I use this for 80# fluoro. After this is my 7'6" Viper paired with a Mak 20 SEa loaded with 700 yards of JB line, which I use with 100# fluoro.

Yes you are so right my bad!!! That is my US Terminator, a different guy was asking about that stick, I got them mixed up.

Maybe tomorrow I will get out to the garage and do a lift test with my GP Terminator, maybe with 25# of lead. It would make an interesting comparison photo.

I was an old largemouth bass guy back in the mid 1970’s and around 1980 I bought a 7’+ Phoenix rod that they now call an acid wrap … back then my Phoenix worm rod was what they then called a “ Roberts Wrap” … same thing … I love the idea of having the line pulling straight down on bigger fish … the tip doesn’t want to roll from one side to the other… go for it !

I just purchased (from a member) My Mak 16ii SEa, took it to turners and had it loaded with 500 yds of 80# J Braid white, and 50 yard top shot of 80# izorline. I have various fluoro # to top it with. I have it paired with a an (In my opinion) undersized rod right now, Cousins CJB70MH. I was hoping I could find another Cousins, yea right, lol, but I am keeping an on on the UC 7'6 Predator. But other recommendations for matching this real are appreciated.

For some context I live in Central California so my trips are limited to usually one per year, but I like to have the right gear. I have some other setups that I have used in the past, but I wanted one for flat fall/night time, and potentially longer range fish.

    The MK16 is a nice sized reel…
    I prefer a rod (7’6”) in length…
I’ve been through the 5’6” lengths back in the 1990’s …
You can move down the rail with a 7’6”.
With an 8’ you need to be thinking ahead.
The heaviest flat falls I’ve used this year have been 320 grams to 200 grams.
When you pick out a rod hang a 320 gram on the tip … that’ll tell you quick…

Now that is a setup to be envious of! I've been looking at that 775 to go with my mak16 ii

    Yeah it’s a killer outfit…
I found a 775XH (60-120#) blank at Island Fishing Tackle (310-707-1205) in Carson and had Darin Dohi (310-617-5145) in Gardena wrap it… it’s doubled wrapped down low for more back bone and lighter wrapped up top for more tip action.
    Fitted with a MK16 or a Penn Fathom 40N it’s a killer rod … killed a 120# 🎣 last trip.

I’ve sold 7 Penn internationals this year all tricked out by Cals on eBay …
I kept one 12T and a 30T … both two speeds blueprinted by Cal’s … they get put in my reel bag … just in case … I’ve been upgrading all of my old school Calstar’s some without … some with rollers …
