I haven't bought a new iron reel since I got gold trini's when they came out. Thinking I'll get a Tern. What size is comprable to a trini 16 & 20? Don't got anywhere to fool with them around here.
What, you expect a Tern to be an upgrade over a trn20? Open the spool bearings and lube them with some TSI-321 and you’re as golden as the reels.

It won't be an upgrade but these gold reels won't last forever. Figure I can splurge every decade.

Used Trini Gold 20 for LONG time, nothing better. Read that all the Trini Gold gearing etc. was now incorporated in the ToriumHG's. Bought one two years ago (a 20HG), man it's great, and so cheap, for a great jig reel. Started with Penn 500's I tweaked, 50 yrs ago, then went to Newells, then to Trini Golds, and now, Torium 20HG, smooth, small, powerful and inexpensive. IMO.

Started the same, Penns, newells, progears, trini's. I like the idea of stainless guts on the terns, sort of like a modern newell.

Torium hg’s Just aren’t as smooth as the Goldie’s IMO. I normally leave my Torium 20hg at Home and fishing my fathom 25n and Saltist 35 bg. They have been the dedicated iron reels for a few years now. Bait fishing though I fish a Trinidad 14a & 20a.

My favorite Surface Iron reel is Tranx 500 HG. Just cast and turn the handle. From Calico bass to Yellow Tail to Tuna it can handle it all. My second favorite reel is Penn Fathom star drag. It easy to cast, incredible free spool and affordable but can be a challenge when hook up to big fish.

I recently got a Tern 500X and so far I love it.....Used my Tranx 500 for years and loved it but it spent too much time in the shop...(typical Shimano)
More details please. Why were you having to send your Tranx500 to Shimano so many times?

Whats the challenge using a Fathom when hooked up...? Moving your thumb back and forth?...One of the best for it's application.

Penn Torque TRQ25N star drag.
Better freespool than any aluminum-spool reel [and 99 percent as good as a graphite-spool Newell], all-stainless gears, choice of 6-1, 5.4-1 or 4.8-1 gear ratio; plus all the features of a modern premium star drag, like one-piece frame, HT100 drag, etc.
Just discontinued this year, so pretty good supply still out there on store shelves.

The fathom is one of my favorite series of reel I have 15 ,25 one and 2 speed but hook up on 40lb Tuna is a challenge on the Fathom 25 Stardrag with 6.0:1 gear ratio. It is hard to turn the handle. That's why they came up with the 4.8:1 gear ratio option in the Penn Fathom 2 Star Drag.

No more torque star at all or only the 25n?

Looking to start focusing more on throwing the iron instead of being stuck in the cluster at the rear of the boat...would love your guys' input on what reels you like best for this application

Solid reel, smooth casts far, last week I was casting farther on my 8’ then my buddy’s 9’with an accurate. Light easy to operate, birds nest was cause I didn’t set up the mc, but afterwards we had a lot of fun, customer support and maintenance is easy

I have 2 set up using a UC US90 and US100 Monsters throwing 80 MC spectra and very short 50lb mono top shots.

Local > Tranx500HG and a Trinidad 20.
Long range > Talica12's

The Talica12 can really throw iron from the tiny snipers, sniper plugs up to 45's, 7x's just about as far as I could with the Tranx and Trini and I have 2spd to back it up.
