While drifting off San Nic, I tied on a butt-ugly octopus jig to bounce off the bottom for halibut and the CPT laughed and said nothing would bite it. Two drifts got me nothing. While the boat was setting up for another drift and I was going to put it away but my wife asked to use the set-up. She drops it down. One minute later she thinks she is hung on the bottom so I told her to lift the rod and reel. She did, and gained line, so she had something. Got it near the surface and we saw it was a nice halibut. On boat, it weighed 41 pounds on a spring scale. You just never really know.
