OK for "kids" to out-fish you, or not?

While drifting off San Nic, I tied on a butt-ugly octopus jig to bounce off the bottom for halibut and the CPT laughed and said nothing would bite it. Two drifts got me nothing. While the boat was setting up for another drift and I was going to put it away but my wife asked to use the set-up.

She drops it down. One minute later she thinks she is hung on the bottom so I told her to lift the rod and reel. She did, and gained line, so she had something. Got it near the surface and we saw it was a nice halibut. On boat, it weighed 41 pounds on a spring scale.

    You just never really know.

You need to fish with a different group if the prevalent feelings, about kids outfishing them, were negative.

When I was 8 there was a 'gentlemen' in this 40s that took my pb bonito at the time. It flopped out of my sack and he claimed it was his. I was closed to tears at the time. I'd like to think that my generation would not do that. Seeing most of the comments on this thread I'm sure I'm correct in that assessment. Also the fact that on the trips I fish people go out of their way to help out and cheer on kids.

    Tight lines!

Yeah that was pretty messed up. Lol

Different times. I don’t think that would happen to a kid these days.

If you got an issue with a kid catching fish you have problems. Id watch my kid outfish me every day for the rest of y life and be happy about it. Not that I have any control anyways, he already outfishes me and hes 9. And im not even kidding.

Unfortunately that type of behavior on some boats still exist. Had the crew and captain steal all of my nephews fish before and gave me 5 out of the 10 I caught of "my yellowtail" that were definitely a lot smaller than the ones I caught. Crew and captain just said "oh well" when I confronted them about it. Never fished that boat ever again.

Nobody is younger than me on a fishing trip, I'm the biggest kid on the boat. If some young gun is catching and I'm not I'll ask to see what he/she is doing. Especially the youg kids cause it also makes them feel involved in what's happening. I'll always hand off to a little kid, especially on a slow bite. The look of determination on there face is priceless. Fun by the way is rule #1 when fishing.

Yes on that pure dumb luck ! One of the charters i go on every year is basically a booze cruise for my friends.I'm there to fish.A few years back we were chasing those rat Yellows off of Oceanside.A picky bite at best and i can't get bit using 12 lb. test.Drunk guy keeps dropping in bloodied dying sardines,no casting just dropping a bait in the water with 40 lb. and he's got 5 fish to my zero.I was so desperate i tried his technique and still caught nothing.Zero luck for me that day.I quit fishing and started drinking.

Fish a lot of jig sticks up on the bow for yellowtail. My favorite style of fishing by far. If there is any kid on deck I find the most enjoyment out of hooking and handing a yellow on the long rod. You want to see a kid work. Give him a pissed of yellow on a harnell. Guarantee you that kids gonna want to fish next to you up in the bow and ask you if you have a jig he can borrow. It’s how a lot of us started our jig fishing addiction. No one is cooler than the guy with the long rod killing yellowtail in the bow. At least that’s what I thought when I would see Bruce smith slinging the hell out of a jig.

I've seen people do this while everyone else is doing it "properly," and the guy who just grabs a near dead bait, drops it straight down off the boat, and just slowly pulls line off the reel not paying attention catch the fish.

Kids that are new, as well as kids that are already sharpies, their excitement is contagious! Total joy.

Now, those guys who cluelessly stream line all over the place, spending half the time in tangles, and coincidentally getting bit a lot--well, that razzes my berries.

    Good fishin'!

If a kid.....or anyone.....is out-fishing me, i'm going to pay attention to what they are doing...and then thank them.

If a kid....or anyone.....is out-fishing me, i'm not going to hook and hand to that person. but that's just me.
