Just replaced the water pump and oil in the lower unit on my 9.8hp 4 stroke tohatsu (among other things in the top end) and I’ve ran it twice for about 10 mins and there’s oil residue under the motor and about 3” off to the side of where the oil plug is.
There is no signs of it leaking from the plug or fill line cap. No signs of external oil anywhere. No signs of water in the gear or engine oil.
I first noticed it the morning after the first time I ran it. The ground was dry so it was easy to see.
I moved it to another spot and ran it and when it dried there was the same oily spot. It’s only a few drops worth, just enough to make a palm size slick.
When I replaced the water pump I greased the rubber fitting that connects to the upper unit feed tube and also wiped the inside of the impeller housing with a greased paper towel to get the impeller to set easier (probably not needed and imo has no affect on the function of the cooling system). I replaced the thermostat and greased the gasket and the rubber on the thermostat. Just enough to make it look wet.
Any ideas before I just start double checking fluids weekly and running it?
Pic is the motor and the last spot is off to
The side because I moved it to wipe it down and recheck the caps and seals.
