TRQ 12, the most fun little reel to fish, covers from inshore to 50lb without blinking...
my Baja Special ( now that is upgraded with Cortez Corvertion bridge and sleeve and dogs assembly)
and my new favorite is the extra narrrow 113h frame from tiburon, if you think YTS frame (same size than Baja Special) was narrow check this out
cortez convertion bridge assembly (all machined SS) Vs stock floating dogs, ratchet, sleeve assembly
Thanks Alex for posting Tom's Baja bridge pics. He deserves credit for his awesome work. If you are going to work a reel hard, as you know, his bridge is a must have.
I have that up grade on my baja special too. Hard to pick just one but if I had too it would be a 27 monofil I pinched from my dad and put a newell kit on when they first came out. Dogshit slow, crappy drag but it would flyline a chovie really well. Caught a ton of calicos and bonita on it. Caught my first albacore on it too.
you know I love my two Baja Special reels, but found out that their achilles heel was the dogs material, dog posts and also the way the rachet, sleeve and and dog springs, work togueter.. all the antireverse assembly was good up to certain amount of drag, but the way we fish in Baja we were changing dogs and complete bridge with bent posts every season or two, now with that upgrade from SS material that problem is long gone.
that work needs to be known with the guys that love the Baja Special reel / US senator
Wow, I didn’t know that Tib made a narrow kit for an already narrow special.
I like my old squidder .
That's what got me into fishing .
Where did you get those hotrod parts for the Baja special ?
Oddly enough I love my conquer 7000
Tony, go to Cortezconversions.com Prepare to be surprised with the number of old school reels you can beef up with his parts.
Now my Baja's are bullet proof as they get, and it's a drop in improvement! No fiddling with assembly.
the Baja Special upgrade
the big handle on my Baja came from Alan tani .com from the same Alan tani, send him a pm to get yours.
What about the extra narrow frame/spool.
That was a special limited run. They're gone now. Super narrow 4/0
Makes it a penn 49? No?
Thanks for the link steelfish.
That seems to be one of the only weak links in the Baja specials .
Want mine as beefed up as possible .
I dont know the width and other specs of the 49, but I do know now the kit made the 113h into a pretty unique reel (special run only few made), it feels really solid and pack tons of 80# braid, its like the new YTS of the braid line time, 113h upgrades are endless.
Definitely, my us senator. And yup, it's got a heart of steel.

My first reel was a Penn 200 Surfmaster that I got for my 12th birthday in 1959. I had it completely rebuilt last year by Ken's Custom Reel in Oceanside. Over the years I bought many Penn reels for the simple reason, they were just about the only one that made good left handed reels in many sizes. The last Penn reel I bought was last year, it was a Fathom 2LDLH.
Fathom 12 star drag, hands down. 25lbs of drag and I've beat up a ton of fish with it as 20lb outfit.
