Been bored out of my mind! All boat maitence is done, all rods fixed, refreshed all my tackle. Im ready for the bottom fish opener!

I have been fishing surf perch all winter long, both in the surf and off Damon Point. Very easy fishing, jusy two hooks above a 3oz sinker. Razor clams for bait. I like to put some salt on the to firm them up. Cast out and wait. I have not lost any gear and have been using the same rig all winter long. Had decent weather yesterday and hit Damon point, walked out about 1/2 mile maybe a little less. Perch bitting good on the top of the tide. Got 7 or 8 in an hour. Threw some small ones back, kept a few too. Dont even need to cast out far, sometimes I get them right in tbe trough at my feet. Once tide started running out hard, bite shut down, then only crabs. Not giants or as good as eating as bottom fish, but its easy and fun.

Very nice, used to do it alot. We used to use sand shrimp, with the special hook you secure them to. Have you tried shrimp and clams out fish them?

What's your favorite recipe? Fillet, batter with panco bread crumbs?

    Way to get after it.....yum

I found if you're not fishing in the white water. You're fishing too far out.

I have tried shrimp. Pain in ass, fall off so easy. I have found clams and squid both work well.

    .
    Thanks for posting your report.

I have a question for you.

Can you catch Ocean Perch off the beach in the Westport area or is it an Ocean Shores kind of thing only?

Thanks again for the report and pictures.

Did you ever talk to the guy the had the shop across from Granny Hazels.. He used to put on a derby ?? Anyhow he was telling me about fishing by boat in front of the trade winds in tokeland ( mid summer ),, Casting towards shore catching like record size perch.
He was really a source of knowledge for surf fishing..

We do very well on the beach off westport, fish top of of the tide and use razor clam necks, the part we cut off.

    .
Thanks for your response Paul, good to know more things to do around here.

Another question(s), does moon cycle or the time of day the high tide is effect Ocean Perch?

Charlie Benton is the real expert on the fishing times, we just fish the top of the tide and see what happens...
