For the last month I've been itching to get out and target the biting bluefin. A buddy and I have been trying to plan a trip but our schedules never matched. I finally said screw it, I'm going solo on the FREEDOM!

As we headed south from 22nd St. Landing, there was a residual lump from the previous day's wind but still manageable. It was surprisingly only 6.5 hours to the border from San Pedro. Full throttle with no time wasted. A few miles short of the Capt's destination, he saw signs of fish. And it was GAME ON!

Got my first on 40# Yozuri Top Knot fluoro with a 4oz rubberband sinker rig.

With an assist from the crew, Dan lands his near 100#er on 40#.

    VIDEO: Dan's Bluefin

I get another similar sized on 30# Yozuri fluoro that bit a flylined, butt hooked, hot sardine with the smallest circle hook I had. Tried using 20# when the bite got picky, but success rate was extremely low on these brutes.

Our pro photographer Damian approves of the models for the pics he's going to take.

Another BFT close to 100# for ZZ Top. Sweet!

Crewmember Blair sorts out the numbers after dragging them out of the hold.

Another crewmember Mark hard at work delivering his cutting skills to the happy anglers.

Ended with limits of bluefin to 100 lbs and 35 quality yellowfin. Outstanding fishing, exemplary operation. I've been on the FREEDOM 3xs this year and every trip has been 100% effort and service. And a big bonus, they don't gouge for fish cleaning like some boats do. Will I be back again? Most definitely! Yes, that's my full throated, very highly recommended endorsement.

    Good job!

I would love to fish from a local landing, but no processing kills it!

Sherm - awesome report. I'm out on the Freedom next week. Question: were the bigger models on flylines also, jigs, 25lb or what?

Freedom has been a LA/OC overnight operation
that gets "it", without much(any) competition now these days.
Jeff Jessop is underrated as a Captain IMO. :Pogo_Stic

Mostly flylined baits. Heavier line landed big fish. Light line (20-25) got bit when slow, but didn't land big fish. Only one caught on jig: Flat fall.

    Hey Ray! SMASH IT! Haha!

Sherm - good to see the fish bit after we left. We were done - but Greg told us you guys were coming - and kept telling us to keep at least one going until you guys got there. We were wiped out. Good to hear it worked out for you guys.

Thanks for the report. Great trip! We were surprised to see the Freedom down here last week. Sounds like it was well worth the boat ride down.
