Ive been reading the reports from this past weekends fishing offshore and I see a re-occuring theme in many of the posts.

I see lots of people who are pissed off about other boats comming to where they are killing fish. People pissed off that somsone made a call with "their numbers" and brought in the fleet..

Yet, at the same time the same people that are complaining about boats showing up on their numbers, are also people who got those same numbers from other members here or dockside.. Isnt it sort of Flawed and Hypocritical to ask for help on finding fish, then complain about the result when numbers are given close to your position where you are fishing and other boats show up???

I guess maybe as a group where do we set the line?

If you go fishing and land on a big pile of fish, and other Bd'ers are out there struggling do you call them in? If you are struggling to find fish, do you sort of expect fellow BD'ers to call you in if they were WFO on fish?? Would you be a little pissed to go back to the dock with barely scratch fishing results, when only a few miles away another BR'er plugged the boat and didnt offer numbers??

Ive got a DCS radio on my boat, and Ive taken the time to load in many of the regulars MMSI numbers and not once... I say again, Not once has anyone on here used that system to contact me on the water. Using the Position Poling feature on DSC would greatly eliminate much of the unwanted fleet showing on your numbers should you choose to share them with specific people..

Ive thrown out numbers on 2 different trips this year, where I had found some fish. Once to Gene Aye on 68 out of ilwaco(which isnt even their primary channel). He had not one fish on board and hadn't hooked any. I was into double digits and thought I should throw him a bone to help him get some fish on the boat, it was pretty foggy so I had to give him precise numbers for him to find me.... I broadcasted my numbers and when he showed up, so did 2 other sport boats and a charter boat... The other time was with my Buddy boat that was 10 miles away on another trip this year. I sent Him my Position thru the DSC and he showed up, and no one else came since I electronically sent him my numbers...

Im curious at what everyone's thoughts are..... especially when it's when you are the ones who want the numbers?

Share general areas not numbers, or a heading and distance. Chances are people will find their own fish and the parking lot will spread out a bit more.

call in the fleet, as you're about to plug the boat. then leave when they show up :)

My concern isn't the boats showing up, but how they do it. There are too many out there with no ettiquette. At least those on here should know better than to run right up to or through a guy's live bait bite or trolling pattern. For that reason, I'd stick to the confirmed MMSI list and not go with an open broadcast.

I have no problem with posting up that night or next day on where we were when we got them so the internet fishermen can find a starting point. But, I don't want just any old yahoo, or 20 of them, showing up with no regard for the work I put in to find a good school.

:appl:agreed. We were at some numbers SW of the rest of the fleet, as we went by (boat was plugged) I gave a shout out as I saw some BDers, middle numbers only, and we were all alone at those numbers. Its the other boats responsibility to stay clear of other boats, especially if they are on a bait stop.

We are still learning and sometimes have been at a loss without some help from the BD brotherhood, and we are quick to return the favor. Not set up on MMSI yet. I would not give out my numbers either until I was done if people our going to show in mass or worse run over your spot. So, thanks to any of the ass hats that do that for shuting down the information pipeline. Make it tougher being a new guy in a big ocean, but we will find them eventually.

I give out numbers a lot when it comes to salmon and tuna and I hope that the ones that benefit can help me out somehow down the line
If I give out numbers this is what I would expect. the boats that show up in the area give me lots of room. enough room that it does not affect my fishing. So far this has been working great and I will continue to do this as long as people continue to give me lots of room. The boats have been coming in and staying well off me. And also catching fish but finding other schools in the same area not trying to steal my school away or trying to drop in on the same school I am working. I am always happy to help. As long as everyone out there can do this I will be open on the vhf but if people abuse this I will only talk on the sat phone and the rest will be left in the dark. I have had people put my schools down in the past simply because they did not know better but I did not go crazy I just calmly explained to them what had just happened and once they realized what they had done they were very sorry and promised that they would never do that to anyone again. That is good enough for me and if we can teach a few of the new guy this before they put someone&#8217;s fish down even better yet!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>

I have no problem sharing numbers, when I'm done and back at the dock or on the internet, but do hate it when I call them out on the radio I get ran over

I am all about throwing it out there where we are and what's going down, but when it starts to look like the C closure out there, with all the boats in a little pile, why get in the crowd? We had people come in (and I gave some pretty detailed numbers to Ken) that could have put their gear down a mile away and had fish, but ran right INTO the pack like those were the only fish out there.

Once it crowded up, we ran off to the north of everyone, enjoying pulling our own fish without close boats. A few came over to where we were (most notably the jig/jackpole boat Don noted) instead of working out south or just a little ways over.

I think it is just the mentality that the fish are only in one place, so we all need to fish it. I'm going to take the lesson from that day as get on a spot, and if the spot gets crowded, work away and pull the fish with you.

First of all, my appologies for letting my green crew member drive my boat within 100 yards of the other two boats we found on Monday 40 miles outside Westport. I was setting up gear and turned around to see two boat directly in front of my boat. I immediately had my green horn change course. Totally my fault, I should have been paying better attention.

Second - I think everyone is pretty much on the same page and I agree with most of what is being said.

I've got a DSC radio and entered many of you fellow BD'rs into memory. I admit that I was pretty stoked when we slayed 21 tuna on our virgin tuan trip and as we finished up, I announced our posit. Maybe next time I'll use the DSC method. Maybe we need to update the list because I know some of you are missing from it.

Sportsmanship - I personally think its okay to offer up posits but I also expect to be treated with respect by others (i.e. maintain your distance).

It's a huge ocean. There's plenty of fish for everyone and they're not all occupying the same water. Give each other some room and above all, be safe out there.

Be glad your catching good fish. If you ever need to put things in perspective try reading the san diego fishing reports. As for me I would say share your numbers but PLEASE keep your distance when you get there. That's about the only thing that makes me not want to share anymore.
