the buttons for same day were greyed out last fall, around Sept/October, also as i was making reservation for the 2023 season.

This was for 5 star. The website said call them to make a reservation for same day processing.

In Oct/Nov 2022 Fishermans Processing website did not allow one to make reservations for the 2023 season yet. When I called them, they said they wewoulod update their system for 2023 season later on last fall.

Have not checked the websites since last fall but as I live close by, I do not need the same day processing. Just pick it up at a later date when it is frozen solid.

But if you drive 8 hours to get to the boat, don’t cut the heads/tails off the fish in the parking lot so you can fit them in your cooler to drive home. Many here on BD will rat you out to the cops and try to get you arrested - so now you have to book a hotel room for a few days and wait for the processor to get around to cutting your fish for you.

I believe this is the unfortunate reality of all the 100+ pound bluefin being caught. It doesn’t take but one fish to make an angler ice chest challenged to bring their catch home to process. A first world problem. I made my reservations the day after I got back from last year’s trips and was able to schedule same day .

    This is from 5 Star’s website;

    SAME DAY SERVICE

Is provided for customers who need their fish processed the day they arrive back at the dock. Often these customers have a plane to catch or a long drive home. If you want Same Day Service we strongly suggest you make a reservation well before your trip departs. We will filet and package your fish and get you out the door as quickly as possible. However if you have Frozen fish we will need one to three days for the fish to thaw before it can be processed. This fish can be picked up at a later date, shipped to you directly or flown air cargo to your local airport.

There is the Shelter Island boat ramp. A very long time ago I used to process fish over there and they were set up with cutting tables. Been a long time since I have been there.
Also Shelter Island pier has a fish cleaning station… 1776 Shelter Island Dr.

How is it illegal to cut the heads and tails off? Disposal?

the issue/problem is how to legally dispose of head/tail/guts/backbones .

one can not just put them in someone else's trash can like the dumpsters by the landing. Do believe laws prevent dumping in bays to avoid rutting carcasses and smells.

Another possible issue with cutting off a head or tail or both is if fish species has a minimum length limit. This is like the filleting on a boat rules from fish and game

That filleting law is for Mexico. Interesting that Mexican law says that you can process the fish once unloaded from the vessel that the fish is caught. That includes a fish processing vessel.
    For California: 27.65.

    For California: 27.65.
from Ca fish and game website click here

27.65. Filleting of Fish on Vessels.
    (b) Fish That May be Filleted: No person shall fillet on any boat or bring ashore as fillets any fish, except in accordance with the following requirements:

so this is your fish after unloading from the boat

there are rules on fillet length, how much skin left, labeling, etc

    (c) Fish That May Not be Filleted, Steaked or Chunked: No person shall fillet, steak or cut into chunks on any boat or bring ashore as fillets, steaks or chunks the following: any species with a size limit unless a fillet size is otherwise specified in these regulations. California halibut may be filleted or brought ashore as fillets south of Point Arena (Mendocino County).

I am very glad I live 15 minutes from the landing and do not have to deal with the same day issue. Just have to deal with carcasses in my trash and when the trash truck comes. neighbors not happy during heat waves with fish rotting for multiple days before pickup.

If anyone is attending the various fish/boat shows, stop by fish and game to see what they say. fyi

Did you understand that California DFG enforces Mexican law. If the fish were caught north of the border then California law applies.

My understanding that they only do 10 same day reservations per day. If you are late with your reservation, those spots are already taken up by people who made reservations before you.

Tried to make same day reservations last summer for this coming October's trip...no go, so it'll be shipped. Means I can drive the wife's car with no ice chests instead of my truck and have 1 less hotel night, which means it'll be about a push cost-wise.

I too had to scramble last year to get a catch processed. Three observations:

    1) Get off the boat as SOON AS POSSIBLE (Get the crew's OK, stay safe - don't jump) hurry down the pier and go straight to the processors -- ASK if they have any Same-Day openings. Several processors were able to fit in a few walk-ups from our boat......just good business. Then, go find your gear's cart that a buddy is watching.

    2) There was a shortage of workers last year. That will - hopefully - get better this year as demand and supply balance. Try for a "WAIT LIST" or just call / text / email a few times to see if anything changes.

    3. Keep an eye open for a new service -- there is money and demand -- someone will monetize this situation. ?Maybe an Long Beach / LA processor will set-up a seasonal branch and collection crew for SD over flow ? It won't be cheaper, but it may be another option.

    Tight lines,

Hmmmmm…..you must have missed the thread in which some kook advised everyone to cut fish in the parking lot and toss carcasses straight into the dumpster that has signs prohibiting carcass disposal. Then slap the red shirt that asks you not to do it; be sure to tell them to fk off and proclaim that every boat ramp in Florida has a cleaning table while waving an American flag.

Local fishermen that catch some bigger size bluefin there's no issue, it's the out of towner that has to figure out ahead of time how to Handel his catch which should be done way in advance of his trip, ther4 is also a company that will come to the boat, pick up your fish and take it to a processor here in San Diego, the company is off Rosecrans right next to M&M Rods

Yeah, so now you guys who drive, not only have to pay for processing but also for expensive air freight shipping, get screwed on the processing yield, and you probably won’t see that fish for at least a month. If I was driving, I’d be cutting off heads and tails and gutting on my tailgate in the parking lot, signs on dumpsters and redshirts be damned. But yeah, I’m a little bit “disrespectful” and don’t take it lightly when someone tries to rip me off.

    Just curious.
How many times have you fished on any San Diego boats?
    How long were your trips?
