Each mature female yellowtail (3+ years old, about 5-10 pounds) lays 1-2 million eggs each year. This is a species with extremely high mortality at the larval and juvenile stages. A few extra rats taken by rod and reel aren't going to make the slightest difference.

    http://escholarship.org/uc/item/6nq200v0#page-52

The DFG regulations reflect this - it's why you're allowed to keep up to 5 yellowtail and bonito less than 24 inches. Because they have high fecundity and the take of a few undersized individuals won't really impact the fishery. Completely different from, say, sand bass, where you're not allowed to keep any undersized fish at all. Those lay only about 50,000-150,000 eggs, meaning taking a single undersized bass is roughly like taking 10-40 undersized yellowtail.

I'm more bothered by people who keep way more fish than they know what to do with. We always complain about seiners who scoop up so many tuna they crash the price end up selling it for cat food. Fundamentally the problem isn't the method of take, it's taking more fish than you know what to do with.

Well, that pretty much sucked the fun and excitement out of an entire family catching their first YT from a PB. See if they ever post another picture or add a report. Congrats on your catch! I see that you have met many of the more passionate posters on BD's website. Hope you come back some day.
