Took out my Marine Veteran for a nice day. Started off out of Newport , got bait then headed for Catalina which we could see from the harbor. 1/2 way there ran into the THICK FOG! Turned around to go fish local stones in 160ft. Had enough fish in the hold so called it a day. Nice glass conditions with a slight just enough current for the fish to eat. All fish caught on live sardines

    I know a couple guys...
Turned around to go fish local stones in 160ft.

Looks like you made the right call there...saved fuel costs, avoided any danger the fog might have put you in, as well as the time it takes to get across the channel and you still put respectable fish on the deck. Well played Banks...well played.

Looks like we will be launching from Newport to fish Catalina Saturday the 23rd. I dont fish Newport too often and heard that the bait barge is closed for the winter.

Can anyone verify if that is true? Really would prefer a scoop of bait over having to only rely on making macs...

Also can anyone give a recommendation as to a preferred place to make macs in Newport?

I fish Long Beach and Mission Bay a lot and we do pretty well making macks by the bait barge (never made macs at the barge when it was "closed") and by the mouth of the harbors. Does the same ring true for Newport?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

Ryan is correct , this is the last weekend for live bait in Newport. I talked to Bryce at the barge last week and he said they will 100% have bait available for this Saturday and Sunday.
My best bet for making Mack’s has been the North Jetty AKA the wedge between 60-100 ft depth. I heard Nacho in LB has squid but can’t confirm.

Making macs is easiest on the west side of the jetty (peninsula side). You can be anywhere from right against the jetty to 2-300ft up swell of it. I like to grab a chum bucket from the fuel dock too, get one of those and you’ll have all the macs you could ever want. Just be wary of the sea lions, once they show up and get the scent, you’re done for.
