After looking at the reel on eBay, I don't think it's a true factory V521. I think it's a Frankensteined reel.

I recall the factory Valley Manufacturing 521's had topless tiburon frames, along with an aluminum handle with rubber handle.

These are pics from 2011 from jigmeister420 who was trying to trade his for some trulines. I believe this is what a factory 521 should look like.

Also, there are quite a few V521 side plates out there, even blue ones. There is an eBay seller "newellchic". That sold the side plates and other misc. Newell parts.

Despite the simple technology compared to today's equivalent reel, I believe the V521 would have been such a killer surface iron reel.

I still search high and low for one. And yes, I would fish the heck out of it.

Just my 2 cents

Proof will be when it's opened up and doesn't have the 5 stack drag in it. I was associated with Keith when he took my 2" wide, and said he will make one, but with a 5 stack drag.

The side plates Keith gave her to sell were not V521, most were P500 series side plates without any logo in them.

Ive seen the reel. Jerry is 100%. Its Frankensteined. Nice reel though. But at $860 ? I think at this price what we are seeing is emotional exuberance.

Hate to burst your bubble, but spoke to the seller, and this reel was as produced at Valley Mfg. other than the handle changed out to a 600 series graphite. Big tip for you all is the reel has the 5 stack drag and to plain bars that Keith produced for thi reel. The plastic reel base was narrowed to 2".

On my own 521 I replaced the plastic reel base with a narrowed aluminum, and removed the top post and installed threaded inserts at the top of the inside cage rings.

Hey Jerry,
No doubt the reel (sideplates) are from valley. The 5 stack is the giveaway, but I also recall that the pinion and gear was stainless, but not 100%.

Also, what about the 1 piece topless frame? I thought that was standard with no crossbars.

I had a conversation with Richard Hightower a while ago and he had 5 or so of them. Maybe someone can reach out to him a take a pic of his V521's

I had one until it went for a swim recently. It did not have a one piece frame however it was topless. I have seen 5 over the past few years and they all had the plastic/graphite base and bars like the one on ebay. The parts look legit...at least from the outside.

Those pics do not show a one piece Tiburon frame. If you like it buy it. I love it but not at that price.

You cant have it both ways. On one hand you say that you burst my bubble which is another way saying that your wrong. Then on the other hand you admit the handle is a 600 series graphite which makes it not 100% factory which falls under the category of frankensteined. Though one could argue the minor technicality.

For $860. it should be 100% factory and better be signed by Carl N himself!
