....I was out on an overnight Monday and we got into some nice WSB and A few Nice Yellow's..... I was lucky enough to be one of the guys to get bit on both...... But about halfway into the fight with my Yellowtail, the anti reverse on my Newell 322 went out......... It would catch and then not catch..... It went on like that until I got the fish to gaff. I've only changed handles and drags myself, is it a big deal to fix??? I cant tell by looking at the schematic.... Any info and help would be highly appreciated.

Easy fix.It could be dirty, the spring is broken or it fell out of place.Too much grease near or on it could also be the problem.

There's a spring that holds the dog against the anti-reverse cog at the bottom of the gear sleeve.

If it just happened intermittently check the screw or “c” clip on top of the gear sleeve and see if it’s loose or missing. Could also be something under the gear sleeve is shredded. I’m thinking a broken spring it would have gone full knuckle buster but it could be that too. Not a lot of parts to break in that reel so should be an easy fix

Sometimes it is just the old grease gets hard and the dog won't move easily. They are easy to take apart. It is not like a Penn where everything comes apart individually. The entire assembly will come out in one piece and you can hold it in your hand and usually see what the problem is. If it is just dried grease it is easy to clean up and get it working again. If it is a broken dog spring or the dog or the anti reverse teeth are chewed up then you have to replace the bad parts if you can find them.

Take the reel apart. You will probably see the problem.Look at the main gear and underneath it.My guess is sticky grease, there's not much that can go wrong on a Newell.

Thanks Guys!!!.. Done and done...... But not before I dropped the main gear and all the drag washers spilled out onto the table ..... So had to go back and figure out the correct sequence to put them back in.... Anyway, the dog might have been upside down, and the spring had just sipped off...... All back together and getting 14 lbs of smooooth drag!....... Ready for another yellowtail, or WSB, or a dink rockfish.. Just wanna get to fishing!!!
