I have done many 2.5 and 3.5 day trips but will be doing my first 10 day trip this year on the RP. Here is the list of gear I already got and like to know which one should I take with me or leave at home. I will do more future LR trips so I don't mind adding more gear if needed.

Hi Tom, congrats on signing-up for a longer trip. Much of gear selection choices depend on your personal preferences and fishing styles. Here are a few suggestions.

  1. Penn VISX 50, 130# solid, Super Seeker 3x5
  2. Penn VISX 30, 100# hollow +130 # top shot, OSP 4x
  3. Talica 20, 100# solid + 100# top shot, OSP 2x4
  4. Talica 20, 100# solid + 80# top shot, Phenix PHD 700X2H
  5. Talica 16, 80 # solid, Phenix PHD 700H, 60# top shot,
  6. Taclica 12, 60 solid, Phenix PHD 700H, 50# top shot,
  7. Stella 1400, 80# hollow, 60# top shot,BLack Hole Popping rod, jigs
  8. Trinida 20, 65 # solid, 50# top shot, Phenix PSW 809XHJ, wahoo jigs
  9. Trinidad 20, 65# solid, 50# top shot, Phenix Axis 909HJ, yoyo jigs
  10. Trinida 16 narrow, 50# solid, 40# top shot, Phenix PSW 809XHJ

Which trip are you on? I’m on Hi’s Tackle charter, my first time with this group. Your Talicas 10, 12, 16, and 20 should have you covered fishing Guadalupe. If your trip hits the lower banks your VISX’s may be put to use, and you’ll want one for dropper looping and trollain’t. I love the Tranx/809 XHJ combo for wahoo bombs and poppers so I’ll be bringing 2 of those. Personally I’d bring one of your Stella combos, one Trini 20 for jigs, and a Trini 16 for bait. I bring a lot of reels and leave them in my stateroom as backups. I usually set up 4-6 rods and leave the rest upstairs and rotate what I need for where we are fishing.

Those are probably what I would take, and still probably is overkill. Could swap out one or two of the Trinadads for a Stella if that’s your preference.

Main focus should be:
Lupe gear
Wahoo gear

How come people keep making this same post ? Can’t you just see what’s been said 100 times earlier ?
The thread title wasn’t misleading at all and made it obvious what the context of the post would be. It would have taken you zero effort and heartache to simply skip right over the thread and choose not to open it.

Should be a listing of recommended tackle and gear on the boats website.......great place to start. Then you still have 9 months to stress over your choices. Enjoy your trip, you'll be back!

see you on the trip sir !

I am also curious on how many of these LR trip do you do per year. I am having a hard time finding friends to go more often on these RL trips.

You have 5 psw809xhj's? It's one of my favorites. The 909HJ is a 909XHJ? The phd700x2h isn't a 100# rod... I use it for 60 with my HX Raptor and the 700x3h for 80# with a Mak 16 SEa, the UC Viper76 for 100# and the UC Invictus 76 for 130#. I'm doing 2 10 days this year. The fish in my avatar came on an early Nov 10 day. I also caught its big brother on that same trip.

I use a TranX 500 HG on both the 809xhj and the 909xhj for bombs and surface iron. I have a couple of popping rigs too. Definitely take at least one of yours. On my last Nov 10 I was the only one with a popping set up and was killing it while everyone else watched. I doubt I'll be the only one this year! There are lots of popping fans on my Phenix 10 day in late Sept/early Oct.

Hey Tom,

I just ran a 10 day trip on the RP in late November and here's what I would suggest. 10 set ups is plenty and will be sufficient on your trip.

You might want to think about the following -

1. (3) 50-60lb Wahoo / Yellowtail jig sticks (these can also be switched out to LB rigs once you're at the Island)
2. (2) 60lb Live Bait rigs
3. (1) 50lb Live Bait rig
4. (1) 80lb Live Bait rig
5. (1) 100lb Dropper Loop rig
6. (1) 130lb Kite Rig / Trolling rig
7. (1) Backup of your selection

On my last 10 day trip, most of us probably used on average of about 5-6 setups. Couple of jig sticks for wahoo & yellowtail fishing and the rest were used for fly lining from 50-100lb. We had a few guys throwing poppers, but for some strange reason the YFT at the Island didn't seem too interested. We only had 1 tuna that was caught on the popper. Hope this info helps and good luck!

Cheers - Doug

Really a good question. Fall trips, especially early November, are the most Tackle intensive trips. Opportunity abounds to fish for everything from small school size Yellowfin up to Giant Yellowfin if they show on the Lower Banks. I’m probably going to be right behind you on the Supreme.

Here’s what I’ll probably bring

Daiwa SL20SH on a Calstar 800L for 20-25 lb
Penn Fathom 15LD2 on a G Loomis Pelagic 20-40 for 30 lb
Penn Fathom 30LD2 on a G Loomis Pelagic 30-50 for 40 lb
Accurate BX2 600N on a Seeker G6465XH for 50-60 lb

That’s for most of the flylining Sardines

Gotta have 2-3 outfits with 60-100 yard topshots of 50 lb for Wahoo jigs and bombs or YoYo iron for Yellowtail. And a 40 lb jigstick outfit for surface iron.

Bigger stuff for Lupe or Lower Banks

80-100-130 lb outfits for flylining Sardines for bigger Yellowfin.

Gets kinda crazy but in this case you really need to cover all the bases.

Mark; A buddy and I will be on the same trip as you. Have you done this trip before? It is the Phenix rod trip---do they bring extra rods for us to use?

This will be the 6th year in row for me on the Phenix 10 day trip. The Phenix rep brings some rods but no reels. I think the rods are mostly 30-40# sticks. You could probably get a hold of them if you have a specific request.

I only get a hall pass for one long range trip a year. One year I brought my son. All of the rest of my trips I’ve gone solo. There will be people every year you become friends with. Don’t worry about going it alone.

thank you for all the recommendation, November 1st is coming soon so it's time to load up for terminal tackle. Do they sell tackle on the RP if I am missing something ?

They should, or some will most likely have it to borrow.

Yes, they’ll have almost everything you need on the boat.

Did you check out the RP report this morning? That water is smooth enough to ski. Good wahoo(big ones this year), tuna, and dorado. I hope it holds up. See you Friday.

It’s a common thread on these boards to list your gear and ask for suggestions. It’s also really easy to not click on a post you’re not interested in. Asking questions like this does more than get specific recommendations. It starts a dialog with others who might have a different perspective, and in this case, introduced somebody to a couple other guys he’ll be fishing with. I think that’s real cool. There is also always something new happening out there and a thread like this could bring up new ideas, gear, or methods that could help your trip.

I just found out tonight that one friend on this trip could not make it because of work related and need to sell his spot for $500 less off the full price. Let me know if any of you guys wanting to take some one. I know it’s a long shot but if interested then I will have you deal with him direct.
