I believe the entire day there were about 22 yellows caught. About 16 in the morning and and 6 in the afternoon. I went on both the am and pm trip. The morning was beautiful but we were having trouble locating the yellowtail until we found the first batch and it was immediate bendo for 10 guys on the boat all within 5 minutes. The guy to the right of me was hooked up on a nice 25 lb yellow off the yoyo and the guy to the left of me was hooked up on a nice 20 lb yellow hooked up on a dropper loop rig. I got excited! I was like oh damn im next!!!. Well thats when shit hit the fan. My yoyo iron was not sinking very well for some reason and I also rented a rod from the charter because my shimano torium 20 has not come in the mail yet. This reel must have had its gears caked in tar! It was very difficult to get speed on the reel and I felt like i was working twice as hard as everyone to yoyo. I did this all morning until about 11-2 i fished a dropper loop rig then went back to the yoyo. Luckily i made a good friend on the boat and he let me barrow any of his 7 other rods he wasnt using, a torium 30, trinidad 2 speed, etc. That definitely made a difference in my retrieval rate and confidence. He ended up getting a nice 21# yellow and I went home with nothing. Oh well, I guess thats why they call it fishing and not catching right?

Overall I need to work on handling a rod and reel, I am still fairly new to using conventional style reels and I think the awkward motion of reeling quickly might have been affecting the action of my yoyo iron? IDK. Seemed like it was a good day for everyone else today, but I know in the PM almost everyone got skunked.

Anyways, Thanks for all the feedback I got yesterday to all my Newbie question posts! They helped and I will always remember them and will continue to get better at fishing yellowtail!

Thanks again guys, special shoutout to KingPete for all the help he has been givin me!

You may want to try a lexa 400 or a tranx. These reels make it easy for a NEWB to yo-yo.

Most rental rods are only good for bottom fishing. You probably should've started with a dropper loop and stuck with it. Nice of the other guy to let you try something more appropriate.

Thanks for the report, not to many people post a skunk for themselves. Keep at it you will kill em next time. We have all been there at one time. We may have been born with a pole in our hand but took some time to learn how to work it.

you can spend 500.00 on all these reels- all you need is an old penn 113h- 109.99. The standby...you'll have it forever and it will always work. At least have one in the arsenal.

There's few more days of good weather. You should give it another try before the weather turns. A few salas on 40lb and your good to go

That's a great attitude everyone has gone on those pricey boat rides get your gear squared away and try a 3/4 day I think you'll have better luck

We've all been skunked out there...keep trying and learning and you will get them! I'm pretty new to jigging as well and didn't get them that way last week (lost patience quickly when people were going bendo and I wasn't), but on the dropper loop. Pick a nice lively sardine or even better if they have any...a lively mackerel! Use a minimum of 8 ounces of lead (10 or 12 ounces if a lot of current). The fact that these quality yellows are being landed in January is a rare thing...to have an opportunity to get them with this nice weather is worth going in itself. Keep asking your questions (I learn a lot from them) and am still looking to get my first on the jig as well! It is only a matter of time, but watch out...their fight is very addicting!
