I'm looking to get a new rod and reel setup for this upcoming season. I currently have a 9ft fenwick with a torium 20 spooled with #65 braid with about 50 yards of #50 mono on top strictly for surface irons and poppers, my second rod/reel is a smaller 7 foot with a cardiff 200a spooled with #30 braid and usually a topshot of #25 fluro. I use this one more inshore and for throwing small megabaits/colt snipers for bonito/calico/ and other inshore stuff.

Im looking to get a decent #30 live bait rod and reel, something I can use for paddy hopping. I was looking at the Avet MXJ. Thinking of spooling it with #40 braid and depending on the fish switch out between 20-35 pound fluro. Now im just looking for a decent rod for this reel. I plan on buying at the fred hall show this year.

Thanks!

That Avet is a good choice but you can never go wrong with a Lexa 400

A Calstar GG 6480 with a Daiwa BG 40 combo should work for you. Also look into a GF 700 or 800m. I really can't give advice on other brands because I have no experience with them. I'm sure that others will give advice to the brands they use.

+1 for the Calstar GG 6480, I just picked up one along with a 270-8H. The Daiwa BG 35 or 40 is a killer reel for the money.

So many great choices these days. Just an FYI, Tackle Direct has the Saltist 30 on sale for $129. You could pair that reel with the Daiwa Proteus and be well under $400.

I have a BTG 270-8H I use as my 25/30# out fit paired with an accurate Boss Magnum 870 (65# braid backing short Flouro topshot) I like the BG 35 for throwing Irons, and the BG 40 for bait just because of line capacity.
