Awesome to see Penn get into the low profile game. Couple thoughts:

1) I feel like the 400 size is equivalent to about a 300 size vs the tranx and the lexa.
2) no power handle configuration
3) levelwind disengages while in free, but engaged while drag is taking out. kinda different.

Seems to be targeting the eastern and southern fishery or very coastal here in the west coast.

Would like to see a larger size, with power handle option before picking one up. What are you opinions of the fanthom / Squall LP?

did pick up the new FTH15XNLD2LH. sick reel.

Should note that the 400 size has a somewhat larger line capacity than the catalogue shows.
Catalogue shows 200/50 braid line capacity, but using Berkley Pro-Spec solid braid, it holds 280/50. Other "thin" braid brands should be similar.
Counterbalanced power handle on the Squall 400 size will fit Fathom 400, and there are a number of "aftermarket" handles of various styles/sizes that will also fit.
Unfortunately, a larger 500 size will not be forthcoming in the foreseeable future.

If I had to do it over, I would get the fathom over the squall. I picked up a 400. I didn't quite like the finish on the edges of some of the plastic bits. A couple swipes with a file will fix that.
Here's a picture of the squall 400 compared with other similar sized baitcasters and a couple older round reels. I'll add some pictures of the squall 400 vs 300 lexa hd later.
The one with my thumb shows my only gripe with this reel. That little edge on the bottom part of the hood just feels so sharp. I've compared it with a lexa, tranx and a fathom baitcaster . All the other reels have that area nice and smooth.

Thank you Mr Carson. You are a legend and such a positive influence for sport fishing. I put 400 yards of pro spec on that 15xn. First time using it via your recommendation on line caps on the 15xn. Been using Izor exclusively before.

good info on the line and handle swap. What I do like is how huge the range is. High / low speeds in every size and a good selection on LH models. Just probably not my cup of tea at the moment. I gave it a good look tho. Seems to be a hit, very popular and well done by Penn.

Squall 400 next to a 300 lexa hd gen ii
I'm starting to like the double handle the more I use it. The squall also palms better than the lexa 400. Waiting to buy a mini super clamp so I can slap it on something besides my proteus rod.

400 size standard ratio is 34 IPT; same as the classic YTS.
400 size HS model is 42 IPT; same as a 500-size reel with a 6.1-1 gear ratio.
    Fast enough.
Good drag, good gears; I'd say to go with the Fathom series to get the aluminum crank sideplate over the Squall, which has graphite crank sideplate.
Your call if 280/50 braid is sufficient capacity after a long cast.

To clarify, the Fathom High Speed model is 7.6-1, and the standard speed version is 6.2-1.

I know this a link to another forum, but the guy on this forum did a review and he absolutely loves to torture test reels. He opened it up and found a gremlin and examined what the inside of the 300 was like. He sounded very impressed with the reel and led me to open up mine and give it a once over. Biggest issue was the lack of lubrication inside the reel.

Mine needed some lube too. Opened it up after reading that post.

Thanks for all the input. Thinking about getting one of these for throwing wahoo bombs! I bought a Tourque 40 N for this a few years ago, and a guy told me the reel wasn't retrieving fast enough for bombs !!! Just a few opinions please.

I believe the 300 is available in a 9/1 configuration.
