Fished Saturday on the new Lo an. Captain Told us we weren’t going to where they had been getting the bigger fish because that day they only got 1 bluefin so he said were going after the smaller grade of fish in a different location. He said have a 25# and a 40# setup ready. We got good bait and headed out. We started fishing At dawn and started hooking up! I started using my 25# setup and was bit After changing out a few baits and changing my hook size. Shortly after, my first bluefin ever hits the deck, A nice 30 pound fish!!Short soak worked best. I realized most all the fish came within 30 seconds of the bait hitting the water. We were chasing down schools, trolling and stopping on kelp paddys. The trolling produced a bonito and a bluefin if I’m recalling correctly. The kelp paddys produced a couple yellows. Bait fishing was king on this trip, very few jig fish. All in all I ended up landing 4 bluefin in the 30-40# range. As for the gear, I brought a 25# bait, 40# jig/ bait, 40# bait, 60# bait/sinker rig and a 100# flat fall rig. My mainly used setup was a fathom 15ld2 on a cousins clb80xlh 20-30# with 40# braid and a 30’ 25# seaguar blue label leader with a #4 mutu circle hook. I got 1 fish with a nose hooked bait and the rest butt hooking. The new Lo an captain and crew was friendly and very informative and this being my first bluefin trip, the bar is set high after being on the NLA. I am stoked.

Excellent report, and thanks for calling out the size, make, and manufacturer of the hooks you used.

I've noticed that a lot of posts call out hooks in sizes only. Other than the hooks are small, it doesn't say much, as each manufacturer's hook sizes are different.

Your first try for bluefin? Wow, you did excellent! Great report, nice pictures.

#4 Mutu circle hooks are so small that they are hard to get into a baitfish compared with a J hook, but that corner of the mouth hookset lets you pull hard. You did it right!

Congrats on your first bft. Many anglers can attest that they aren’t always cooperative. Great job being willing to make the adjustments to get them to bite, and bite again and again.

Ringed Circle hook, any kind. Just don’t swing. Point and reel until you come right. Good luck🐟

I hardly ever go out. but one of the best trips I've ever had was on the New loanne. Marcus and the crew are TOP Notch re guard less of the fishing.

I never use anything smaller than a #2 Mustad personally . Put a 63 pounder on the deck with that on 30 pound .I never use circles and we rarely loose fish .

Just fish the j-hooks the same way as the circles and usually the hook ends up in the same place. On cows they may be appropriate because they tend to swallow everything and gut hooked fish do chewed you off more often. I've caught bluefin to 150# and never had an issue with the j-hook.
