Because of the covid and work at the plant I have not been on this Website since somewhere in 2019. I missed my 2020 trip on the 10 day Excel trip that I have always been on. I am out of date on what Peen has to offer for the long range fisherperson. I love Penn reels. I have a shit pot load of them. What is out there now for live bait / throwing irons / and for the 16 VSX duties? I have a 16 VSX that was hot rodded by Cal Sheets and I love it. I might want to add another for the similar duties. Thanks Tex.

The new series is VISX. The 12,16 and 20 are great. And for the 250 pounders and up the 30 in the 50s are fabulous. You cannot beat them. They are improved from the series that you have. Enjoy and welcome back

Penn for throwing irons: I went with the (bear with me, it’s a lot of letters and numbers) FTHII40SDP. It’s a Star Drag, I fish it with a 40 lb mono topshot, has the 4.8:1 slower gears (more torque)

Fish it with surface iron, swim the jig and you’re better off once you hook up.

Same reel available with 6.1:1 gears, what you want for Wahoo jigs/bombs.

The Torque 2-speed reels are tough to beat as well. Medium frame reels that are lighter then the VISX lineup for anything from 20-80lb top shots
I bought a new torque 15xn 2 speed, its absolutely the nicest small reel in my arsenal, its tall and narrow and holds more line than the standard 15. Great 30# reel, last year I got a 162# bluefin in it with 50# spectra and a 30# topshot of Seiko 30# floracarbon. I highly recommend the Penn torque reels if there within your budget. Match that 15xn with a tilefish jr, and you have a fish killing machine!

Couldn’t agree with this more. I used a friends at the Lupe for a yft that went just over a 100lbs with a 40lb fc top shot and it handled it with ease. Liked it so much I bought one for myself.

Tex, that 15xn in either Fathom or Torque is what I was suggesting you look at.

Any of the International VISX reels will serve you well! In a tough bite on the Excel, I dropped down to 80 lb test which I had ready to go on my 16VISX, 2 hours later, I had a 277 yellowfin on the deck. I would have chosen at least the 30 VISX but you never know what is coming.

Very nice fish. Congrats. I would shit my pants to catch a fish that size.

Love my Torque 25 nld2 for very strong 30# reel on my UC Tilefish Jr. Love my Torque 30/2 on my 8'0" UC Terminator for strong 40# rig. The VISX 12 looks Amazing for a strong 60# reel/Torque 40 nld2 would also do amazing work in this line class with a slightly lighter spool/cast a 'dine just a touch better.

It appears Penn has a answer to the Shimano Tranx 500HG.

25# drag and 42” per crank single knob handle. One interesting aspect is the level wind follows the spool when drag goes out.

A Tranx level wind. Does not go back and forth as line goes out? I fired one a few times on a long rod. Easy, I didn't pay much attention

Thats like a CT250/400 before TEs.

    Or a Abu Garcia.

Off the reel. Line rips back and forth off the top of the spool/friction, through where ever the level wind degree (eye) stopped moving

    Total BS

The hard part is. The level wind packing line and also releasing line with the level wind accurate. The TEs seemed good at that

Pro tip a pro told me.

Before the cast. Turn the handle a tad until the eye of the level wind is centered. Less friction with a longer and more calculated cast

    Actually that works

If the level wind moves on line out. Then a tad of line can be released to center the (eye of the level wind) also.

Need to reward myself with some new Penn Reels…

Love the thread title and recently did just that…
I haven’t been on a LR for about 5-6 years and while I have usable gear I couldn’t resist bringing my gear up to date. My plan is
    Torque 15NLD2 30#
    Torque 25NLD2 40#
    Torque 40NlD2 60#
    VISX 12 60#
    VISX 16 80#
    VISX 20. 100#
    VISX 50. 130#
VISW 50. 130/200# ( blueprinted for more drag for kite)

I still have a Mak10SEA, Boss Exteme600N 2 speed and ATD 30 to add to the mix. My older gear will be gifted to my son.

    Congrats. Must feel great.

Yah. Had not LR fished since 2008. When my OG Avet JX 2 speed. Was one of the first small spectra 2 speeds. Had a great Lupe trip

Next trips 2019. Buddys loaded me some new Torques and Fathom 2 speed reels. Wow just wow

Era, Avet and Accurate had the first mini 2 speeds. I used 60# JB hollow, went straight in with 40# blue label, 2 Sato crimps. High line

Fulfilling a passion. Is the most rewarding. And really not that expensive in the grand scheme of life bills and a life story. Make it a good one. Good for you 👏🏽🤙🏾💪🏾

Get the narrow torque 15 instead of the standard one, taller, narrower, and holds more line.
