if you can measure side plate height and spool width, some Newell experts will know right away. Also might help to put a known reel next to it for scale and shoot pics from a couple angles.

Looks to me like a 338 or 229.

red knob from a red newell on a red stripe "G" series arm, "S" series lever maybe later "G"
if smaller side plates.....big bearing 229 or 235
if larger then 344 or 338
spool width and diameter will tell the story
Last thing.....if the model plate is gone which it appears to be I'm thinking either 1st generation "P" or "G" sideplates with the guts and crossbars swapped out.
I
think the "no letter" series was the first to have etched or pressed in model number and newell sideplates
My guess is a "G" series with modifications ;)

sunk it
338 or 344 from looking at the side plate and width. The bridge screws are spaced wrong for a 229

Probably a 229. I just measured my 229 and it is 3" wide and the side plate is 2.5" across. A 338 is 3 1/4" wide and the side plate is 3" across.

Looks like a 229 to me. Handle side plate extends down to make room for the main gear so the profile is not round. That only happens in the 200-Series.

nope, need to go with you or Cattle Boats
Yes, FrankeNewell. 200/300 series parts from many other reels, add on handle. And, parts of Newell reel loaner outfits, from Carl Newell Charters were colored white, and other colors, long ago (early 80's). He loaned them out and was able to identify easily with some white/other color parts.
