Me and my friend are sailing to Catalina on a 26' boat 7/24-7/27. I am new to the sailing thing but thought this could be a fun trip. I am taking my rods along with my speargun with the hope of getting WSB or YT with either method. The boat has a retractable keel, if that helps, so we are looking for some input on where to focus our hunt. I bought the fish-n-map for catalina so If you guys give me some names I can look them up. The other thing I was hoping to get advise on is fishing without live bait. Can I use frozen squid or should I plan on making bait? If I need to make bait do I just use the cat food and sibiki rig? Morning? night? What about fishing at night while anchored? Last question, promise, We are trailoring from Oceanside so what is the most convienant launch ramp, Long Beach? Sorry for all the questions I am just trying to better my odds of catching or shooting fish.

    Thanks,

Most likely from the description. Where you leaving from? If it's from San Diego that's gonna be a long ride on a 26' boat.

If you're trailering why not shoot from dana point. Is there a launch there? It's a lot shorter....

Typically, How long would it take to get there from Dana Point as apposed to Long Beach. Would the time saved in just driving to DP be worth the extra miles sailing?

    Thanks for the input,

I've never made the trip from Dana Point, but I have from Long Beach several times. From Long Beach it's a pretty quick trip and you're usually on a beam reach the whole way; about 5 hours on a Catalina 30 if I remember right. It'll take you a little longer on a 26' boat.

Thanks for the info. Is there a particular ramp in LB to use?

I've never launched in Long Beach, so I can't help you out there.

I have done that trip years ago on a 26 foot macGreggor, when I was younger and foolish. I would not take that risk, knowing what I know now. That boat is not very seaworthy. you can shoot seabass and yellowtail just about anywhere around catalina. look for kelp, away from alot of the activity. try going out very early in the morning, and be very quiet. good luck, and definitely register a float plan

You are going to have a blast. I almost bought one of those boats years ago (about 12). Make sure you take lots of pix and post your trip. Keep trollers out on the way over. Rapala's do pretty well and you are traveling at trolling speed anyway. Just keep them clear of kelp. I'd use 60lb on the trollers though so you might not have to stop the boat if you do get kelped.

    Thanks,

We decided to push the trip back 1 week so we can better prepare. I will
post pictures and write about our adventure when we get back.
