I am in the market for a used salt water fishing boat. I'm in Southern California so mostly looking for something for the West Coast tuna style fishing. I am looking at a 1998 and a 2001 Parker 2501 with an older Yamaha 2 stroke and wanted input if there are other boats I should consider or what? My concern with a Parker is being able to get high enough somehow to spot fish (I haven't seen a tuna tower on a Parker). I'm looking to stay around the 30K price range (give or take maybe 5K). Looking for input from the experience out there (either boat owners of those who have fished a bunch of different platforms). What to do you like to fish on and why? Thank you ahead of time.

There's plenty of people catching plenty of tuna without a tower. I wouldn't let that stop me from buying the boat I wanted....I'd just learn to read the birds and my finder

Yeah, I do very good spotting and reading birds, but I have also been spoiled with being able to get up higher on a buddies boat to spot paddies. I really like Parker and want some input before I make the plunge. Thank you!

Towers are nice, can't argue that...But you won't see many on vessels below 26'

You should be able to get something with a 4 stroke for close to $30k, start looking on east and gulf coasts. They are around.

Lots of 25' parkers have belly hoops. Full towers with controls are rare and not likely gonna happen for your budget without an undesirable motor configuration.

I'd be open to an older hull with newer power. The cost of operating larger, old (non-e tec) is significant and when you go to re-power it's a big financial hit. Better to find a sound hull with newer 4 stroke power and let someone else take the initial hit on depreciation.

Why limit yourself just to Parkers, there are plenty of Gradys that might work for you
Amen! Plus the market for Grady's can be a little saturated and you can find some great deals back east on them. Go fast CC's are all the rage so functional WAs with normal power (read not 3 huge OBs) get overlooked. Reality here is its rare that you can go over 30kts without loosing teeth in small boats.

What model would I search for in a Grady? That is what I'm asking. I like the look and style of a Parker and have heard great things about them but what other boats should I be looking at? I am looking back east for boats now as they seem to have more at much better prices (even when you include the 3k shipping cost). Thanks!

For 30k you could find a nice diesel
Why is that a good thing? I have thought I wanted an outboard 4 stroke? Why a diesel? And do you still run a kicker to have something incase the engine fails out to sea? I have a bit of a fear of getting stranded and is why I'm leaning towards a twin engine setup? Thoughts?

Cheaper fuel, Longer range. There is a lot of things that can fail other than an engine that would leave you stranded... Like an electrical fire. You could run a kicker for safety but... SeaTow is only a call away. My first boat had a kicker.... Never used it, even for trolling.

Yeah I know the other safety stuff and I've owned many boats but only one was a saltwater setup and it was an older hydro sport CC with a 250

Imo a belly hoop is a must on parkers for offshore. Ive fished extensively on both 10 and 20 models with and without the ability to get some elevation. The sight lines are poor without them .

The cc model is better in that regard., fished on a couple of those too. No cabin or hardtop to block the passengers sight lines. If you have good binos/gyros it will alleviate the lack of elevation on a standard cc......elevation always mo betta.

The 23 cc i fished was a wet ride.

Check if the fuel tank has been replaced. Two friends had to replace theirs in the last two years. Big$...

Always keep in mind that you're not buying the boat, you're buying the motor. Thats where the $ is.

For your price rang can find a boat that has recently been repowered and fairly modern electronics. Or, you can find a good hull with a blown motor, and have it repowered and add new electronics if needed. I know outboards seem to be the way many people prefer to go for power, but if they have a problem, fixing it at sea may be difficult, if being stranded is a major concern for you. Vessel Assist is your best insurance policy though no matter what IMO. I cannot think of the Grady models that fit what you are looking for off the top of my head. Maybe an Overnighter, not sure if that's a model. Also, Defiance boats may have something you'll like.

Getting boat from the Gulf states or east coast will require much more work and commitment then getting boats in Calif obviously but can really work out.

With the price of diesel, you'll really need to pencil out you hours of use vs potential cost savings in fuel, it does not pencil out for everyone

I love my Mako just for ease of tow and the fact that I can put it on a lake to take my pops striper fishing.

If I were shopping for a bigger boat it would be a Grady with OBs or a diesel Farallon.

    Interesting GW Houston CL

Chad, Google "craigslist search" it will show you several ways to search state by state. Also, some states like Utah, Nevada and Ariz use offshore boats for patrol boats.

The above boat looks very clean from the pics, it has a very reliable but thirsty Yamaha SS II OB, the same one I have on my Mako, great 2 stroke motor

Gives you an idea what the dealer market is like. All these prices are pretty negotiable. Old boat /newer motor, newer boat /older motor, inboards, I/o, OBs - it's all there.

Better deals can be found on Craigslist. Just make sure to survey, survey, survey. A good friend recently dodged a huge bullet on a craigslist boat (soaked transom). Survey cost him but ultimately saved him huge headaches and big money down the line, he ended up walking away and later found a screaming deal on a Parker in another state. Do full hull survey, sea trial and mechanical before you buy anything.

I spent all day yesterday on boat trader, I boats, yatchworld....but not craigslist because I couldn't figure out to efficiently search CL (will do that today). I am not afraid to buy out of state of the price is right as many boats are priced closer to what their value is (California seems a bit proud of their boats). And I have no problem paying for a full survey as I agree that is now y well spent. Thank you.
