I fish and work on a boat in Gulf of Mexico out of Texas. We fish a lot of top water for tuna. We have and use mostly Accurate reels.I want to beef up a step,my question is has anyone tried casting the ATD 6 with a popper or yummy ? The tuna we target are 60 lb to 150 lb.

I think the ATD was mainly supposed to be Kite/Trolling Reels.

Spools are pretty heavy on those reels. The Valiants are the accurate reels that i’d Be looking at if I was you. I don’t know what kind of line setups you typically use, but likely the BV2500 or 600 series would fill the bill.

You can cast the ATD-6, but I will point out a better option for your purpose. I would recommend the BV2-800 or the BV2-800N. The ATD-6 weighs 41 ounces without line. The BV2-800 weighs in at 25 ounces naked. The ATD-6 is rated for 450 yards of 50# braid, the BV2-800 is rated to hold 800 yards of 80#. The BV reels have sleeved spool shafts to facilitate casting. For more details as to the line capacities and drag capacities please visit the Accurate web site www.accuratefishing.com. You might even go with a 600 in the Valiant series.

In that case definitely check out the BV2-800. You will see a significant increase in capacity over the DX2-600.

I've got a BV2-800N. While I've yet to catch a significant fish with it, I can honestly tell you that it's a great casting reel when matched with 80 lb braid and a jig stick.

Tear 'em up, Jesse! Use that on June Heat. Remember, Alan dropped down to 60 lb one day. That was a thrill ride. :)

It can be used for both of those! It is a great reel for larger yellowtail and tuna in the 40-80 pound range. It's perfect for situations where you want the ATD power, but in a smaller package. I have also used it for halibut up in Alaska with great results.

ATD6 was put to test this weekend. Our Boat Dolphin Express out of Port Aransas Texas did a short 36 hour trip to floaters. The tuna bit but not wide open.We wanted a reel to cast with but more drag.We hooked 10-12 tuna 60-100 lbs on this reel.Reel worked great most fish were in boat under 5 min.

Hey Texastuna I did a trip with you guys in January and have another booked for November. Was a great trip. I’m looking to get a dedicated jigging rod together for trips like this. I don’t like what I currently use for that. I’ve got a two speed dauntless 500 I can put on it but I’m stuck on rod selection. I really like the black hole cape cod special but it only measure 5’2”. If I build I can get the blank in 5’8”. Could do a 4” butt extension. You got any thoughts or suggestions on the subject.

Not TT but 5'2" sounds about right for a jigging rod. Why do you need it longer?

If I were just looking at fishing off a smaller private boat I would have no issue. That boat he works on is 100 footer with 20 foot beam and the deck of course is higher off the water line. You also have other anglers to contend with when someone has a fish on. It seems a little more length would help keep line off the boat. I haven't used one that short though so I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.
