Looks like my fishfinder or transducer has issues. Appeared to work fine in under 250 feet, but the all depth halibut opener tells different story, it won't read deep.
The electronics package in the boat is obsolete. I planned to upgrade next year, I can't swing that kind of cash this season. So I'm thinking about picking up a unit as a bridge until I do the real upgrade later. I can always use it on 16' CC project boat later. What do you like for offshore that won't break the bank?

I figure up to a grand if needed. 7 or 8 would be better. I still want to fish this season.

I have an hds 7 that won’t break the bank and you won’t feel the need to upgrade right away

Thank you for the offer. I am looking hard at a Garmin Echomap 94sv. Just trying to settle on the transducer now.

I put that unit on a 14’ RIB and it is awesome. I have Furuno black box on the big boat and had Simrad chirp on the last boat and this Garmin is at least as good as either of those as a fish finder (at least until you get way deep, like 600+ ft). Mine is the package with the transom-mounted ducer that does side scan etc and the whole package was well under $1K. Grab that package and you will be set.

Do you have the CV or GT transducer? We fish a lot of deep water halibut and rockfish up here. The GT 51 apparently has dedicated down scan so sounds like it is better for deep water. Adds a lot to the price, only bundled with the new G3 plus units.

Sorry, my last post was incorrect, so I deleted it. I just called my electronics guy who was able to check the boat and the ducer I have is the CV51M-TM. I was way off the first time.

The setup has been really impressive for me. I haven’t tried to fish deep with this setup so I really can’t give you info on that. We mostly fish in the top 200’ and its awesome at that range. It’s far better than anything I’ve seen in the price range but, again, not sure how it would work deep. Good luck.

Thanks and no problem. The new G3s are still listing for 1099. with the gt transducer. The G2 units with CVs can be had all the way down to 500. Per Ray's link in the thread.

    Thanks
Thank for the info. The unit will ultimately end up on my 16' CC so the CV will be fine for that. Think I still need to find a GT51m-tm transducer for the Osprey.

I'm in the same boat, so to speak. Think I'm going to run the CV-TM for now, maybe go over to a Thru hull later if I find one cheap enough. Problem is with the deadrise on my Farallon I need two ducers for the Side Vu to work. I don't think I need the Side Vu enough to justify it. BTW, the Northwind was my dream boat for years. Hope you're enjoying it.

I plan on doing a big full upgrade in a year or two, the boat also has radar and auto pilot. I want side view for nearshore but need a good read in deep water. For now at transom mount transducer will be fine as it is the current configuration. The real question now is do I buy the G2 with a cv51 for $500. and look for a deal on a gt51 or just buy the G3 with a gt51 for $1100.

    Get the old g2
You could update the chart for less than what the difference is
There is no real world difference in the 2 ducers outside of the dedicated element vs 2 paired elements.
Also, you have a mfd dedicated to radar and ap? The echomap wont run either of those

Boat has an old Faruno 1621and a Sitex sp70 ap so the Garmin replaces a stand alone ff that is not working properly. Plan on a fully integrated system in a year or so. Not in the budget this season.

    By the way
That’s a no brainer. Go with the cheaper CV setup. You will be impressed with it and may not be in any hurry to upgrade. If/when you do upgrade, move it to your smaller boat or sell it. Great setup for peanuts.
