Hey guys so as many of you probably know my fishing opportunities are pretty rare because my time on the boat depends on dads availability. This summer I basically have two options and I'd like your input. Should I either do a 4 day trip out to Neah in mid July or go up into the Canadian discovery islands? We've been discussing doing a 10 day trip at the end of july and into august staring in anacotres and working our way up to Comox/Nanaimo/desolation sound/ and Stuart Island but my folks only wanna do it if we decide to skip on Neah. So for Salmon, halibut and Lings which would you chose. I've heard so much about the fat tyees up north but I wanna get an idea from the guys who I trust so that way I can get some real nice fish porn up in here! Thanks guys and tight lines?

Great a to be with your family, but the fishing isn't very good. If you have the time, go a bit further North to Prince Rupert. Great area for cruising and fishing.

What about hitting Neah or Sooke, then run north to Ucluelet. Lots of inshore and offshore opportunities plus the town of Ukee is pretty cool for the family if they want to do a day or two of non fishing. End of July 1st week of Aug. is prime time up there. Look at staying at West Island Marine but make reservations now if they have any left.

I have fished the west coast of Vancouver Is. for quite a few years. For your best fishing opportunities, I would def leave from Neah Bay and work my way up the coast. Campbell River can have some good weeks but its not reliable any more.
There is good anchorage/ moorage in Port Renfrew. Swiftsure Bank ( around the west closure line can be very good - check regs ) you can fish all along the shore 50-80' from Renny to Cape Beale really.
Barkley Sound has too many choices to even begin to list. Bamfield is kinda a locals town and somewhat limited in size. Ukee is the working boat/ charter boat place and way more shore ammenities. Once in Barkley Sound area, there is very good fishing offshore if you have the boat for it and OK weather.

Rob it's a Cutwater 26 so it'll be four us tightly packed. I'd love to go along the west coast of Vancouver island but unfortunately that isn't an option. If we do this trip it'll be along the east coast of Vancouver island up into the discovery islands because we'll be doing a large group cruise up in that direction organized by Cutwater/Ranger Tugs(60 other Cutwater/Ranger Tugs). So really it's east coast or just neah. So any input on the east side? Thanks so much you guys!

Rayan...I was asking because we fish Barkley Sound for a full week each August and the fishing is generally outstanding except for last year. We run a couple 21 ft boats up the outside from Everett if weather forecast is decent. The fishing is much better and much more consistent on the outside vs inside of Vancouver Island. I hate to tell you, but you'll probably put many more fish in the boat in 4 days of fishing at Neah Bay, then you would for a 10 day trip on the inside. However, Hali's are closed on US side in July. Canadian side is open all summer for one/day, 2 possession. That's why you're better off fishing Canadian side. Best of luck!

Really adventure dependent....Neah in July is what I look forward to the most all year. That being said, Canada adds an adventure aspect, plus Hali's. Also, no real places to eat/socialize in Neah. It's fish, fire water, and sand golf in the afternoons.

But...I don't miss Neah July for anything.

I love those Cutwater boats. They're beautiful.

If you want fish in the boat, go to Neah. If it's the cruising experience, inside of Vancouver island is probably the way to go. Don't get too much blood on that soft leather :)

Brad, yeah it's a great boat and fits the needs of everyone in the family :) so far no blood on the leather but if that's what it takes that's ok lol. After talking it over with my dad some more it sounds like Neahs gonna be our choice. I know he wants to fill the freezer as well :)

Another thing to keep in mind is that there is now a new Halibut lb limit on the Canadian side. 60lbs is the limt..anything under needs to be released. That's going to cause alot of guessing in those tweeners where you need to make a quick decision on if it is over 60lbs or under 60lbs........

I think you made the right decision as far as putting fish in the freezer if your willing to fish hard and long....if you wanted more of a scenic vacation with fishing on the side (still a fair amount of fish) the inside V.I, would be the choice.....

Be safe....Swanny

If you can't fish the outside of vancouver island then go fish neah bay maybe someday take a car cruise up the inside of vancuover island scenery is beautiful go all the way up and check it out but fishing isn't much better than point defiance until you get way north. If ever given the chance take 10 days late july and early august and fish the hell out of ucelete. Good luck I will be at Westport
