anyboy either on the trip or know anything about the huge shark thing caught on the RP???
I heard it was a mega mouth, or a basking. Either way it must have been foul hooked.
any more details fella's?
It was caught by Jerry Brown. He was soaking a bait on the heavy gear, (I believe he said his kite rig), 200# test, (Line One), with a 300# leader. I can't remember if he said dine or mack. Took less than an hour to get to the boat. There should be something on the boat's website by now.
nothing up yet, looks like skin fishing was good though
Royal Polaris Sportfishing - Current Conditions
This happened on the last trip, The Rooster probably caught the same one. No pics that I am aware of. from the RP but heard that they took some on the rooster.
Just picked up the latest FishRap. Front page:
"Jerry Brown, importer-distributer for Line One Spectra has caught a lot of big tuna in his day. On one trip he had two tuna weighing more than 300 lbs. - not an easy mark to match or beat. But on the Royal Polaris trip that returned to Fisherman's Landing March 31, Chartermaster Brown had a story that was equally impressive
"I was fishing with a small tuna of 15 lbs. on a 14/0 hook, when this huge shark-thing ate it", Brown said. I got it up to the boat in about 15 minutes. It weight at least a ton, and Capt Santiago agreed with that. It came in like a puppy dog on my T-Rex rod, like other sharks sometimes do."
The mystery fish may have been a megamouth or basking shark, according to those who got a good look. No one had a camera handy and the giant fish departed soon after heaving to."
Since Basking Sharks are filter feeders (i.e: plankton), I'd be leaning towards a Megamouth...
YouTube - rare megamouth shark
megamouths are filter feeders also. i was pretty sure of this and looked it up on wikipedia. pretty cool either way.
i think were gonna need a bigger boat...
Brandon stated that the Rooster also hooked the beast and may have taken some photos..... I want to see them...
Come on guys, someone from that Rooster trip must be online here...
Anyone have any more information ?
Check it out , photos from this years Indy thankgiving trip Nov 24 to ? on their website. I got a big one and Clarence got a huge one, released obviously, we were calling it a sleeper shark
this was a pik i found on the indy's website. they didn't have a name for what it was
when did the rooster catch it?
Basking Shark.....not..... they are the vegitarians of the shark world. it took about 3 seconds to realise it was not a Tuna on the line, at the same time it wernt no rock fish. that sob had some big teeth
Thats Clarence's fish, you cannot imagine how big it was, let's just say cow tuna x 5 Fights like a 30lb'er
the fish in that picture IS a basking shark... and they dont eat fish..
