As I turn 79 on the 6th of August, Betty asked what I would like to do.
I said lets go to Catalina for three days. We pack the boat along with our Cat Kitty.
Out of Dana Point at 10 AM. Get bait and fuel and we are gone.
Having the latest SST there is a big spot of warm water holding from the 14 to the Avalon Bank. 70 t0 72 degrees.
We looked all day Monday for paddys and did not see a one,
Stayed at White's cove Monday night. Up early and on the outside hoping for WSB. Two good hits but no fish. Back to whites cove as the wind had picked up.
Wednesday up early changed to marlin tackle and headed out. Straight for the Avalon bank good clear water 70 71 just past the shipping lanes. Betty yells HOOK UP on my rod. I was using a Shamono Tulles all roller rod and Avat 40/2 with 450 yards of 65 Spectra and 100 yards 30 mono.
This was at 10:00 am the fish almost spooled me but Betty got after the fish and I got some line back. The Marlin was out of the water a number of times. We got some pictures but have not looked at then yet. I will send them to KC and he can post them for me. As I don't know how.
I have caught and seen a few marlin in my life, but never one that fought like this one. I had it to the boat three or four times but was unable to grab the leader to cut it under the swivel I wanted to save my B&P Zukor.
I was on this brute for three hours This is the largest Marlin I have ever had on.I'm going to say over 200#
I know I'm not as strong as a few years back but I put up a hell of a good fight. Today I feel like I was in a Bar fight. But hell I'm only three months out of the hospital with back surgery,The fish was right up to the side of the boat and then made a dash under and cut the line on something.
Give me a chance to put the pictures up before you call BS.
What a great birthday. Thanks for all the nice words.
Thanks to Ambusher for the calls.

    Diamond Jim

Congrats on being at the right place at the right time and hooking that marlin. Sorry to hear the line parted but hey, you got it boatside 3 times and wanted to save the lure and get a clean cut, I'd call it a catch. Congrats again bud!!!

p.s seems like all the marlin are big this year.

Congrats Diamond Jim, that is one special thrill, hooking a local Marlin, a good release too, minus the lure.

Jim my friend, you are the man ! What better way to spend your 79th birthday than with your lovely bride on the pond and a spike. Good to read your report. May you and Betty have many more :urno1:
