Mrs, Grady has been cleaning out another of her parents residences and came across this gem from 1984.

It sure hits home with the state of our fisheries at this time!

Att. Nelly, you should recognize that Olson guy!

Here are some scan’s of the paperwork from …..I-456

I will sign it if it was available today. Even in 1984 the tribes were gill netting the rivers in an El Nino year.

One interesting statement I read in the Jack Metcalf editorial is at that time they thought El Nino only happened every 20 - 40 years!

How many have we had in the last 20 years???

    A bunch!

Scary thing, I remember that petition, pretty sure I signed it. Only wish it would have changed the Boldt decision.

    Thanks for posting...memories. ...

I would have signed, but I was only 14:frehya2:

As a newcomer to the PNW, I had no clue, the fishing regulation "book" with its number of pages blew me away. I think Colorado regulations might have been on 3 pages. Hunting was under 5 except for the GMU maps.

The problem I see, is that now the Indians have a bottomless supply of money to go through the courts. They can outspend anyone now on lawyers and appeals.

They don't have as much $ as the recreational and commercial fishing population of WA. Also they don't have the tolerance for risk. Also, not all tribes are created equal. They have disagreements with each other on this subject.

First we need their stance on fisheries to hurt them in the wallet. Then it needs to be sustained. Then the individual tribes will divide against each other. Then they will crack out the calculator, and calculate that negotiating fairly will yield them more $ than continuing to negotiate in an unfair way.

It starts with rec's and NT comm's banding together, and making it hurt for them.

I remember that fight well. are you all right with this being reposted in other places? I know a lot of young guns that could benefit from reading this little piece of history, and getting a better understanding of how long this has been going on.

Go ahead and post it. We need to educate as many people as we can on our side of things.

Even Ron Garner was not in this state at that ime he told me!

Never been inside a casino, never bought fish from the market (or for that matter roadside stand that I don't know where it comes from)...

I totally can get the the sustenance and ceremonial thing. I would bet that 99% of their 50% is sold commercially. My personal feeling is that everything commercially sold should be managed differently than sustenance and ceremonial.

If they want to eat salmon and crab every meal fine.

I'm not really surprised to see this.
Until there is impartial oversight for both sides, penalties for not following the rules for both sides and true accountability for both sides, these disputes will never end.
