Be careful, this either just a really bad cycle,
Or the start of something, they have elections in July also, Lot of other spots,
Don't be surprised if checkpoints and bull shit stops hit all time high until ? Looks like change at top in elections some of th e officials only have a month or so to create
Retirement make sure you don't pay it

Amen James & Ali. Too many wonderful memories had, and to come, to quit on BOLA. When the crime scares me more than the Tow down...Further evaluation will be needed!

First, very sad for the couple. These type of horrific crimes happen everywhere though. The difference and the reason people are hesitant about traveling to Mexico is very simple. The government and police are completely corrupt. Say what you want about law enforcement in the US, but go ahead and try the next time you get pulled over and try giving the officer money, in return for not getting a ticket. Good luck with that. You will end up in jail. In Mexico, you offer a cop money and you are almost certainly going to get out of any minor offense. They make up laws only enforced on Americans. I don’t worry about all the killings by the cartel and deported gang members. I worry more about being targeted by local police because I’m an American. It also sucks having to pay more for goods and services because I’m an American. It happens.

If you bring a boat with a big four stroke outboard to Baja just be sure and take it out of the water at the end of the day. Leave it connected to your truck. Take your keys (both truck and boat) and lock the hitch and the truck doors. If you can lock your trailer tires or something like that, then do it. It is a change of lifestyle down here. For years I have left my boats anchored for weeks at a time. Keys in the truck, windows rolled down, doors of garage and home left open 24/7. It is a sad situation and requires you to provide for your own security. Just do it.

Crime happens everywhere.

Difference here is police dont care. Hospitals are 100s of miles away and if you need life saving measures you die. That’s the difference. We all love it in Bahia but this is the reality. I certainly hope changes take place quickly. We should know more tonight.

Very sad news. RIP. My boat, though old and ugly, is part of me. I can truly understand a man trying to protect his boat
We can all learn from his mistake and not let his actions go un recognized.
Even being armed, you still cannot draw when pointed down. Live to fight another day.
This is a good reason to not tow down to Baja. Use the local services.

I used to love it as well. I know there are arguments for safety but I unfortunately don't feel safe anymore either and have sold my trailerable boat and just dont care to go there again. You would have to be kidding yourself if you ignored the difference in the police, the military and the fear of the locals. Is it a false sense of security we have here? Maybe, but you do what you are comfortable with and I would rather avoid it. It is sad for the fine people of Mexico that they have to pay such a high price for the dirtbag drug runners that are hurting them so badly. RIP to the fine couple that just wanted a peaceful life.

Sincere condolences to the families of Jo Anne Butler and Ray Ball.

The Mexican tourist economy is going to suffer if some vacationers and tourists decide to avoid it. However the meth, heroin and cocaine drug trade provides a more direct, and much larger financial incentive for the local Mexican police, military and politicians than the tourist industry does. So, if you think that if a bunch of vacationers avoid Mexico for a awhile that they will suffer and get the message than think again. The drug trade is their bread and butter and it is a dangerous fantasy to think that our financial input to their local economies will get the genuine attention and respect of the authorities and that that will make it safer to return. The bad guys play both sides of the economy and when the chips are down they bet with the narco traffickers.

If our two countries legalized the above mentioned drugs and Mexico adopted a second amendment type of law that liberalizes handgun ownership than the scene would be safer. Fantasy? Much less of a fantasy than going down as it is now thinking that your tourist dollars will save your families life.

With all due respect......

Are, you outta your friggen mind brother?!!!!!

Not a single one of us should ever be ok with such a thought......... never!!

In any case, it's a true shame to what's happening in such a magical and special place. Unfortunately the problem is not singled out to just Mexico...... brash senseless killings are sadly a much more common occurrence everywhere these days. There seems to be very little respect for people and their lives anymore.

It's just magnified in Mexico due to the corrupt police force, as well as the sheer numbers game (ratio of killing per number of people living in an area) and a few other things.

Such a truly beautiful and amazing land Baja is, that this is just a seriously sad situation!! Some of my best memories and the most caring and gracious people I have ever met were down in Baja. It pains me to think of not visiting there again, or to think how badly this will effect the good, honest, caring locals who would feed you and give you the shirt off their back. The whole thing just sucks!!

We can only hope that somehow maybe both the US & Mex can collectively put their heads together and hope to find a way to slowly halt this problem before it goes the way of the Vaquita!

My friends that still drive down there, and all you other BD members who do the drive....... be safe!!!

The unknown fisherman:p:

Yep scared about this Chavez asshole getting elected. My dad is from Venezuela and we have some close family friends in Caracas. It’s unbelievable how bad Venezuela has become, it’s worse than what you see in the news. I’m afraid the same could happen to Mexico.

Just returned from there last night. We arrived last saturday, apparently the night it happened. Stayed at Guillermos, and heard nothing about it until a couple days later. There were a few cops cars rolling around and a military patrol cruising the road, but nothing out of the ordinary. We heard the same BS of "the authorities are all over it..". We ran into captain Juan out of SQ who was down there for a while, and he said Daggetts and a few of the other operations he had spoken with were already having cancellations coming in. Tragic for the victims and the town. It will definitely hit the locals hard when fishermen stop coming down. Unfortunately my 11 year old son got his first taste of Baja fishing on this trip and loved it. Sad to deny him another trip if things start to go downhill much further. I'd have to agree with the previous comments on meth. Seems to be spreading through the small towns and all that comes with that crap.

Did'nt read all the posts so may have already been covered.

Friend just got back a couple weeks ago from a 10 day road trip down to East Cape.

Said Feds were following buses with the full black gear and weapons.

And a local cop stopped them just to ask if they have had any problems.

Somethings up...maybe more then we know.

Very true Ali,

I live in Temecula and the last week there was a guy shot in Menifee and another guy (i went to school with) shot in Wildomar. There is risk anywhere we go.
Even in California, I have the right to bear arms, at least at my home and on my boat. In Mexico, only criminals (and cops) have guns. That makes all the difference. Not only are gun bearers safer, but so is everyone else. Mexico should open up safe areas (good guys with guns) and unfettered capitalistic development. It would thrive.

The right to bear arms won't solve anything, no shortage of brutal killings here, school shootings, random murders, gang shit, domestic disputes, the list is endless. There's just a certain percentage of humans who lack whatever gene it is that keeps the majority of us from killing each other. Been happening since the caveman days. There's just fucked up people on this planet. Until we find a solution to that nowhere is absolutely safe.

All this, no guns in Mexico talk. When I was younger, I would go to Mexicali with some neighbors to hunt doves and quail. They took a shit load of shotguns everytime. What is the hoops that have to be jumped through to get a gun to Mexico?

Don't kid yourself, the fishermen are a very small part of the tourist industry in Cabo. Look at all the high end Resorts. Cabo cater to families, golfers, etc.

Going to Rancho Leonero week of the 18th. Think we will just stay put at the resort and not venture to far. Never had any problems in the 25 years of going to east cape. But all this shit has my head on a swivel .

Look at the yachts at the marinas , cabo in the early 70 s didnt have shit for marinas , LA Bay in the early 70 s was the same , fishing and fishing only put LA Bay onthe map along with it's world class diving back then cabo didnt have golf courses in the early 70s cpmpared to now , the number one hotel back then was the Mardi Cortez which is still there , cabo does cater to the golfers , party goers and it turned into a shit hole , if you didnt experience cabo in the early years you have no idea what it was like , it started with world class fishing everything else followed

Yea. The Hacienda was a grand old hotel. Classic Mexico with a parrot in the lobby and on a hot day they would put a wet towel around your neck and put a margarita in your hand while you registered. Sure do miss it. Gone forever.
