Just picked up a Fathom 40 2sp loaded with 80 braid. Have it paired to a 30-80 rod (Californian Tri-Helix 8’ XH) Good combo?

Sounds like a good #50 pound combo, but I don't know that particular rod

For more on what drag to have........

Was at Lupe at the start of Nov on the Vagabond. Mike advised us to mark the spot on each reel that had around 16 lb of drag ( 80 & 100 lb line) and to go up to that mark as the fish took the bait and made their first big run. If you start with higher drag, you can snap off the fish due to the explosive first FAST run. Also, we had LONG soaks so the reel would be down to 1/4 spool when picked up and this also causes the drag to be increased at low line level on spool.

after first or second runs, we would bump up to strike ( set around 30% of line strength) and then start the grind in often in low gear after long runs done. Close to the boat, you would bump the drag up more past strike as the fish settled into circling.

So just ease into the drag ( lever drag reels) when you get picked up. Had a great trip and got more fish than I expected to. Listen tot he crew on what is and is not working. Have a great time

And some people say Cal Stars are behind the times in rod technology.

Did you guys measure the sunset and full numbers on the fathom 40 when strike is at 23lbs?

700h seems a bit undergunned for this application...

I have two 700h's and love them but would never fish 80lb on them. I top out at 50lb on mine and 60lb on my two 700xh's But each to their own especially if it works

Yea I have fished the 700XH and it was under gunned for the grade that week at The Lupe! Watched a guy on 40lb topshot with a nine foot rod and a trini 20A. These fish were kicking his ass for 2 hours at time... Sure it can be done, but why?

Ok to clarify maybe they are not all 700h rods as I didn't look at them all the boat rod I did look at was. Regardless those 40's are the best value out there.
