Monsoon season has arrived in northern NM/southern Colorado. For me, until they hit, I wait because waters get warm quick with diminishing snow pack. I’ve got too much respect for trout to target them when the water warms. But……..
When the monsoon comes, the air temps at altitude can drop into the 50’s (or lower) and water temps quickly cool with the fresh rain. When that happens, it’s time to throw on the rain gear.
I’ve been fortunate to roll out for a couple of multi-day trips this month. Getting onto a cold river, enjoying a few beers with buddies, and touching some fish- well it doesn’t get much better. We timed the trips to coincide with sucker spawns. If you ever want to see trout on the chew, watch them munch on sucker eggs. They eat them like Joey Chestnut eats hotdogs at the Coney Island 4th of July contest.
And when the sun was out, the hatches were crazy with green drakes and stones. And the fish were picking them on the surface.
Good times with good friends. Until next time.
