Jumped on my friend Jon's boat a 30 foot banana patch.
Headed out from Koolina @ 5:30am - going straight to the spot. Get there around 7:00am - corner goes off and takes drag for a second or two. 5 minutes later, 20# spearfish in the boat. No birds no nothing but we stay in the area. 1/2 hour later center comes down and reel starts singing. We clear lines and start fighting the fish. Though it was a big donkey but 40 minutes later and some tired arms, up comes a 160# G&G big eye tuna that we hoolked in the cheek plate. Talk about dogshit. Smallkine celebration, clean up and put the fish away. Go back to the same spot and HANAPA a 5 banger. We were able to get 3 shibis (25# & 30#) G&G.The other 2 hemmo. We make one more pass but nothing so we start heading back to the barn. Just when we leave the spot, the center comes down again another spearfish about 30#. Back at the pier at 2:00pm. All bus'by 10:00pm.:hali_olutta: Mahalo Garrett for the info!!

    Scott,
Cooked they are good but sashimi is the bomb; we've had a couple that never firmed up, but most of them the meat has a great texture and mild taste when eaten raw. ONO-liscious.

They occaisionally show up off the south coast here. I caught a spearfish a few years back on the Pac Queen. It was a shortbill variety...don't know about the non-shortbills here tho.

The persistence in working the spot payed off big time. Way to fire on the great catch.
