Solo Cod Trip 3/01/2021
Santa Monica Bay
Water temp around 57 degrees
Air temp was a bit chilly
Murky green/brown water

Started scouting the Redondo canyons to search for deep water cod since depths changed to 100 fathoms. Set the sonar to zoom mode looking for cod but wasn't easy to locate due to weak returns. Not sure if the full moon and/or weaning off a low pressure had anything to do with the slow bite. Found a few here and there between 57 to 75 fathoms. Got my limits of 5 Reds and released many more with the RokLee Fish Descender.

FYI: From my recent research, Vermillions and Sunsets fall under the Daily Bag Limits of 5 Vermilion rockfish per person.

This past Sunday was 2/28/21, if you were out codding you had better turn yourself in to the DFW or correct that title.

The sea pickles were all over backside of Catalina 2 weeks ago in the lights.

These reds were stocky for their size. Food source is definitely not an issue. They were upchucking squid eggs, shrimps, red crabs, and smaller fish. Most of the drops were a blind guess based on the seafloor structure since my transducer doesn't show fish marks that clearly below 350 feet. At that depth and deeper, my sonar paints the fish marks as a blue dot.

Thanks, good reminder about the new regs---although in CA we have no true Cod--I would put our rockfish up against any Cod for taste, great trip.

Thanks for the report! The new regs will take some getting use to. 100 fathoms is waayy down there. Congratulations on finding what you're looking for. Tight lines!
