Has anyone ever attempted this with a older Penn like a No. 155 or even on a larger one like the 500 jigmasterr? I ordered 15 5/8" dia. x 1/32" thick Grade N42 - Nickel Plated Magnets from K&J Magnetics - Products and wondered if anyone has done this... The reels I wanted to do this to both have aluminum spools and I always get backlashes since I'm still new to casting. Heard about magging and thought it might help me so I wanted to know what you guys thought and if anyone has ever attempted this modification.

I think some of the east coast stripper fishermen still mag their squidders but I don't think it would be worthwhile to mag a 155 or a jigmaster. There are way better reels at you can pick up used for very little money that will be much better reels than anything will end up with. Some times it fun to upgrade the old penns with newell spolls, bars etc. but you usually spend more money than if you just bought a used newell reel.

I did it for kicks to an old jigmaster and a 155. It works; you just have to play with the number of magnets or how close they are to the spool to find out what works best for you. You have to use rare earth magnets. I'm guessing the ones in your link are? What I did was super glue a small nickel plated washer on the left plate for the magnet to stick to. You probably will want at least two magnets, but you'll have to play with it. Smear a little drag grease on the washer to help prevent corrosion.

Well the jigmaster was given to me as a gift by my dad and had a new spool and newell bars on it. Ordered 15 of the magnets so I'm thinking of just epoxying a washer to the sideplate and adding as many magnets as needed... Thank god I went with 15 of the 1/32 inch disks because now I can adjust and fine tune it.

Use superglue; it's easier to work with. If you decide you don't like the magnets, you'll be able to get the washers off. It will be a lot more difficult with epoxy.
