Thanks for being there Chris... Wish I coulda made it. See you at the next one. Clay did an awesome job as well as the little boy spearo. When reason gets redundant in the ears of local gov't, the voice of a kid always puts a smile on their face. It's like watching a dog get excited when you pet it. You gotta admit, that spearo calling out his "spearfishing peer" was a bit creepy.

Damn, Holy Mac beat me to it. We pooled our time together and had a couple guys give our side as kayak fisherman.

Imagine if the line was hundreds long out the door with people wanting to speak. Maybe the impact would hit home. Each speakers got 1 minute. Hundreds of people would be hours of profishing time. Show up.

We already know when the next meeting is. Schedule time off now. If you would take a vacation or sick day to fish, do it for this. Even if you don't make the whole meeting be sure to be there for some of it to support our reps and contribute during the the public comment portion.

I guess you all saw me babble on the microphone on the live feed. I didn't expect to get called up so early. Hope I didn't mumble because I was nervous as hell.

I think we had a pretty good turnout, and lots of comment cards. I sensed a good deal of frustration among the RSG members, especially regarding the timing of data provision, and inadequate time to digest it all. I'm already concerned about the closures themselves, but the manner in which they are executing the deliberations is equally troubling in that they are moving very fast whether they have adequate data or not. Furthermore, with all the PhD's on the SAT, I'd expect something more thorough, especially since they aren't competing for the funding like an NIH grant.

I feel that strength in numbers is helpful, so I hope to meet more BD'ers at upcoming meetings.

Big thanks to Jerry (vinlandviking) for letting me carpool with you.

I get so sick of seeing these threads deteriorate into bitching....The problem with email, blogging and message boards is it makes you think you should say things to people you would never say to their face. Thanks to those giving good info for those of us that are confused by whats going on.

We have to be very careful what is posted on BD and other fishing related websites. The greenies are watching and will exploit anything posted or said by fishermen. Splitting up fishermen in to differant groups makes us weak.
I get daily phone calls from key players in the MLPA. Majority of them are to groom the posts on the forums to protect US the fishermen.
BD has not spammed the email list about the MLPA. There is a reason behind our actions. One day you will recieve an email...
Come on guys,,, Jason has a very good point. Turning on each other just makes us look bad.

Here is a response I recieved from a surfriders representative. They believe coastal access rights (within an MPA) will not be affected.

The MLPA actually encourages non-extractive recreational uses like kayaking, diving, snorkeling and of course surfing. A stated goal for the MLPA is to preserve and enhance opportunities for non-extractive activities which include recreational, educational, and research opportunities. The rationale for improving these activities is that significant educational, cultural, and economic benefits will be felt by local communities and ocean users.

The MLPA focuses on human activities that are burdening nearshore ecosystems; and surfing, kayaking, diving, and snorkeling are not among these. Marine Protected Areas simply limit the removal or extraction of resources (i.e. fishing, kelp harvesting, oil extraction, etc), but still allow public access and recreation. The focus of the MLPA is to examine and limit human activities that impinge on nearshore ecosystems--recreational activities are typically not considered to be damaging.

The law says: “…the area shall be open to the public for managed enjoyment and study….

In fact, MPAs could actually enhance the experience for ocean users because MPAs increase biodiversity which means we will be sharing our favorite recreational spots with thriving marine life.

So, not only will ocean recreation be unaffected, but designating areas for protection will help foster greater educational, cultural, and economic benefits for ocean users and local communities.

There has been some suggestion that MPAs will prohibit recreation. This idea is a far-fetched and only serves to undermine more legitimate concerns, and constructive recommendations for implementation, from our members who also enjoy fishing or fish for their livelihood.

Simply opposing MPAs is not helpful or realistic at this point.

It’s a law and must be implemented by the state—there is no way around it.

We have thought long and hard about supporting the MLPA and for since 1999 we have held a supportive view. Please review some of our policy position documents.

Hey smart guy you dont know everything I cant make the trip recovering from CANCER surgery is that good enough reason????

Kind of depends on the cancer. You seem to be getting around the keyboard OK, so I thought your were mobile.
Honestly, I was not directing my rant at you. Its just the meetings I went to break down to about generally ten to fifteen tree huggers, ten spearo's, two anglers.
Anglers spend far and away more money on gear, boats, liscenses and theres far more anglers to boot. Why is it so few show up to these meetings? other then there recovering from cancer surgery. Area closures are coming and can be influenced on where and what they will be. Get involved in any way you can.

Gary, hope you heal quickly!

Here are some petitions, some of us are getting filled out, and turning into one of us if you cannot make the next meeting,so we can get it to the MLPA outreach person. I am sure you can change one to Point Loma, or whatever region, area is important to you.

Anyone else, get co-workers, families, whomever to fill these out, to the areas that matter to you. You can send them to me, or I am sure someone else, and I will be sure to get them into the record. PM for my address.

Gary, I contacted the group who put them together, I pointed them to this thread. I know others were having troubles too, hopefully, they will chime in, or let me know what needs to be done.

A point made by a number of RSG members was that this process was more time-driven rather than results-driven. Updates to current information have not been distributed in a timely manner, which limits the degree to which they can be incorporated into the deliberations. I think lawyers might file this under "disclosure."

The potential outcomes have been troubling to all of us, but the way they are executing the objectives of the initiative are upsetting both sides of the table. I will definitely be including this point in the next letter to the senator's office, along with some other gripes I have (required funding, job loss for both consumptive and non-consumptive, quality and quantity of data, access to data, etc etc.
