Woke up to a light NE breeze and left DP at 7:30. I took my neighbor Chris fishing. He has done a fair amount of fresh water fishing and has gone saltwater fishing on the head boats but had never really caught anyting.

The goal was to put the 39th and 40th butt of the year on the boat.

We started off in 70' of green, 57# water and started drifiting through some fingers. First drift my buddy gets bit sets up on it. Looks heavy. Half way up it gets pissed and starts dumping line with big head shakes. Right kind i grab the gaff. Pissed off fish. After a couple of more runs we coax it to the surface. I slam the gaff home on #39.

The fish was 39"'s ... guessing 25#'s it was thick. Chris is 6'4" for a little perspective. This was his first good saltwater fish, i was really stocked for him.

We set-up again and few drifts later I get slammed. Heavy...head shakes. The right kind. Rather than having chris try and gaff his first fish I tell him to grab the net. This one came up easier and Chris slipped the net under a fish right in the same class as the first one. Under strick instructions due to the pregnant wife to stop bringing home halibut and tourting her we decided to let #40 swim away.

With the pressure off by 8:30 we decided to go pull on volume. We anchored up on some hard bottom in 80' of water and it was WFO on sheepeshead, reds and other misc bottom dwealers. Had over 30 fish on strips with the majority of the fish being legal sized but no monsters.

    AWESOME DAY!

WTG, and props on the release. No sense in taking more than you need unless the fish would not survive anyway. That size fish will be someone elses trophy in the future.

You read my mind lol. My experience was with 150# BET. 4 gaff shots and 3 holes in the fishes head I watched it sink out behind the boat....

That could be interesting. You could have rocket launchers in the shape of a menorah. Dreidel boat fenders, Star of David stern light. And as you cruise the harbor you can toss out gelt chocolate coins from your bait net as if you were chumming, many possibilities.

Sweet trip! Damn 40 hali's, i cant get one! Bad ass pics! Sick!

Technical it's 40 legals we did catch some shorts to.

Don't get discouraged. I caught 3 legals my first two years here. This year I wanted to focus on fishing them vs. shark/offshore fishing as much. When you do catch one really really think about where you caught and why you caught it there.

Hey Dave. I actually haven't taken a legal from that area in a few months now. But over the summer that area was great. I still check in there from time to time :) but it's been slow
