It wasn't, but that is funny. Every time someone posts a report on the coronados eventually someone else will ask if the navy is cheking documents. Why ask unless you plan on going without them.

I would very much doubt they would do that !!! Especially with a kid. When I know for a fact a co worker of mine was there in July at the rockpile he did not have passport or fmm or mex fishing permit????? I know they got a ticket paid the bail/fine (in cash) told to go back across the boarder. He got his docs now!!

Two thrown in jail (including a kid), and another boat seized.
I'm surprised this hasn't been on the news! Where is the crying mother? I'm not at all saying that it could not have happened, but I will definitely no believe it until is see it in U.S. Newspaper, news reports, or printed in W.O.N., The Log, or Pacific Sportfishing. Just my opinion but, the Internet blogs with no source quoted is B.S. to me.
By the way I do keep all passports and visas in order on my boat while in Mexico, because I know his could happen. It's their country and their rules. I'm only a guest and need to abide by the rules they set.

Going tomorrow with my 13yo son. We have all our docs(passports, mex lic and FMM). I don't know if I believe this. I was down at Squidco today too getting a few things for tomorrow including a mex lic for my son and nobody said anything about this story. I even said that I read differing things about kids having to have docs fishing in mexico but was getting everything anyway. Joey just said yes that you need it even if he is 13yo. No mention of a guy and his kid getting taken in. So I have to seriously doubt it. If something like that did happen the guy must have berated the Mexican Navy personnel and that is why they would take someone in rather than fine/send them back across the border.

Joey is the one that was telling me about it today! I was down there today and they were showing me how to get the visas on the Internet! They're doing this now as a free service for fisherman! They help you get the manifest and answer all your questions!

A bunch of Kayakers should go out and fish the Nados. Get a free ride to Ensenada and go bar hopping.

Just in case someone completely believes everything they read on the Internet, i'm just kidding with the above post.

I have been traveling down to Mexico with my young children for quite some time. The law enforcement and people are extremely nice and courteous. I would imagine that if this played out as it was posted, whoever the officer was that took them all the way to Ensenada and threw them in jail would find himself without a job. There's no way the Mexican officials would want that kind of bad PR about the way they treat Americans. That guy would lose his job and be ridiculed extensively.

Fines, tickets all those would probably be acceptable but I doubt for sure that they would bring somebody all the way to Ensenada with their kid and throw them in jail. Unless there's a lot more to the story we haven't heard.

They had such a huge backlash for impounding the boats that were in Mexico without temporary importation permits, and not being properly documented with identifiable vin#'s a couple years ago. That turned into a great big shit sandwich for the newly formed Mexican agency that organized it. I'm sure they don't want to repeat that. Their main economic resource is American tourists. The last thing they want to do is scare all the American tourists and keep them from coming to their country.

And why the hell is this posted in Southern California inshore and islands section? That wasy my first clue that something was amiss.

Si . We all know that's how it's done down there ! I can't tell you how many times those ,those, those kids in the military with machine guns , shoot Gringos just for the fun of it down there . Not to mention putting them in jail for life ,just for running the stop sign. Oh the horror. I can't believe I've survived going down there the past 45 years !

Private boaters entering Mexico from san diego to fish has very little positive economic impact.
If you see the many changes that Mexico has been making over the past 6 months to tighten up their once lax visa program, you ca best believe that a new type of visa will be sold to boaters allowing them access to the 12nm zone.

did you know the visa if free for 7 days by foot or car into Mexico? That is because $$$ is spent.

My biggest fear is not the paper work as I have all the papers needed and it was easy. My biggest fear is that they will close the Islands one day.
