Meet Laguna Beach's New Marine Protection Officer - Around Town - Laguna Beach, CA Patch

Laguna Beach has a new marine protection officer, and he's got some deep roots in town.

Jeremy Frimond 25, graduated Laguna Beach High in 2005 and spent seven summers watching out for swimmers and surfers as a city lifeguard. As part ofhis newgig, he'll be doing things like visiting schools and talking about the importance of preserving marine life to students,as well as enforcing theMarine Life Protection Act. In other words, don't even think of taking sea creatures out of the tide pools when he's around ...

    BWAHAHAHA!!!!

Part of Frimond's 24-hour-per-week job will be enforcing rules of the Marine Life Protection Act, which the California Legislature adopted in 1999 to protect and conserve the state's marine and ocean ecosystems.

Once during a large swell, Frimond fell off a boat and landed on the back of a 13-foot great white, according to the blog Swell.
"I was trying to pick up a piece of trash coming by the boat, and when the anchor pulled as we passed over a swell, I was thrown off backwards and head-butted a shark," he said in an email. "The shark bolted away right as I landed on it — I was left with a bruised ego."

I am sure the kid went through some vetting to get the job, my money is that he is one of "them"...

I wouldn't doubt that his parents are somehow connected as well, these types of positions are often rewards for something else.

Edit: not saying it's necessarily the case in this situation though...

HAHA HAHA, That's so damn funny, but probably true!!

As I mentioned in another post, I say we have an MLPA PRO TEST on July 4th in Laguna Beach! ! Let's see if that kid has some steel balls. If there's hundreds of us out there on boats, kayaks, beach etc, then what are they going to do? Ticket us all? Just don't bring your ID or fishing li0cense. Screw the fishing Nazis. It's the government's and oil drilling that f-ed up the waters, not fisherman. But they're preying on us to pay for their BS and mistakes.

MLPA PRO TEST DAY, IN MEMORY OF THE REVOLUTION AND OUR INDEPENDENCE,

    JULY 4TH LAGUNA BEACH! !!

I thought that fishing without a license was a citation not an arrest.

    Otherwise, right on, etc.

    I ran into that guy off crystal cove. I was spearfishing and he came up in RIB I will skip the 1 hour long story about the BS detainment;

    1. I was not breaking the law, in the end I did not get a ticket, and instead tried to educate the naive officer.
    2. Stated that "all shore based spearfishers he has encountered were poachers"
    3. Claimed he has never ran into a shore diver that had a lic.

    4. After I said "yes I have a license, it is in my car less than 500 yards from my shore entry" he detained me made me climb on board. And stated if I do not admit to not having a license (falsely incriminate myself) that he was going to sieze my dive gear, fins, and nice Riffe speargun to put on his wall...

I did not make that one up! He even bent down and stroked the gun on the deck of the rib as he said it.

    5. Once off the beach after motoring in, He told me to give him my info and they would send ticket in mail I can keep my gear... I stated "no sorry, I invoke my right to remain silent, your gonna have to either arrest me, or swim to shore ad check my license.

It went downhill from there, basically 40 more min of me getting hounded to falsely incriminate myself, and me smiling and saying little "do I not still have my 5 amend rights" he laughed and said NO not until you are arrested and in handcuffs

    AZZHOLLE!!!!

Agenda-driven ANYTHING is usually a farked-up mess. This fool needs to learn Rule 1 of law enforcement--THROW BACK THE LITTLE ONES, SAVE YOUR ENERGY FOR REAL VIOLATORS. Of course, MLPA is little more than make-work buzzwords and wishful thinking, so I'm not too sure exactly what it is that he is supposed to be doing. I suspect he has similar questions about his status also.

He DEFINITELY needs to tighten his act up smartly as far as detention time length goes. He was WAY over limit, and had he written a citation it would probably get quashed. The reverse edge of this sword is that he can check license status by name/DOB, and case law requires you to "identify yourself" when detained by a peace officer--assuming he is some sort of P/O. "ID yourself" does NOT mean "with documents"--verbal ID meets the law's requirements. Who knows--maybe a verbal ID would have meant a license status check--found you good to go--and then he's done and gone. You DO have to have the licenses in immediate possession when fishing, so he did have a ticky-tack violation right there--but it would get dismissed at court with presentation of status proof. Why he wasted the time he did messing with you for what was pretty obviously small potatoes in the big scheme of things is baffling to me.
