Couldn't find any bait around Redondo Beach so I decided to drive up to MDR for some Sardines from IN-Seine and maybe find some halibuts around the Twin Roads of off El Segundo on the way back.
As I was nearing the dock to my surprise I saw lots of men dressed in red robes and as I was getting closer I was certain they were Buddhists performing some ritual. Now I certainly don't have a problem with that. I was also told all the sardines were bought up by the large group of monks.
Again no problem, first come first serve, I do understand that, and I did end up with some nice brown bait.

I am just a little perplexed, maybe someone could enlighten me.

By the way, all the halibuts will live another day.

It pisses me off. Larry and mike could at least save some bait for the fishermen. I have been there after the monks have bought them all. Anyway, there are sold and released back to the sea.

Buddhist phlosophy it has to do with the suffering of all animals , as someone who has killed 23 tons 43,000 lbs in 8 - 5 day trips rod and reel just in 07 off Orgeon alone listen I was off PB in the seabass zone 3 yrs ago and caught a mackerel and had it in my palm ready to hook and drop to bottom ,then I felt a thumping heart beat and stopped and paused and thought then I released the mackerel, just a feeling that day

Without the Buddhists we probably wouldn't have a good bait operation in marina del Rey. Be thankful that we have live bait when we do.

From what I've heard, their money is more greener than ours... just saying

Like others have said, Larry needs to make a living and the SMB private boater fleet has really shrunk due to slow fishing in the local area

Doesn't that make Larry a kidnapper?
Will this prevent him from true enlightenment?
Could be worse, they could be flying planes into the bait barge.

would it be wrong load your boat with a few friends, to set up by the bait dock, and break out the sabiki's when they release?

Saw this last year at Dana. Except my monk had a black trench coat like the Matrix.
Seems they have a belief that the release of any imprisoned life helps their ancestors.
Rented the boat bought the bait and took it outside the harbor and dumped it.

The best part is Larry and Mike just go net them back up right after they leave.

They do it on the day the "dharma wheel" turns. It is the one time a year where the karma is multiplied many times for good deeds done. Even if the bait is recaptured, it's life has been extended and the good deed is done regardless of the outcome. I don't necessarily have an opinion one way or the other. The monks are happy, the bait guys make money and stay in business. Doesn't bother me a wink.
