For my fellow active and retired military members.

Is the MCRD ramp currently available? Has any one checked this week?

I use it quite a bit and I know it has been a background check hassle in the past few months just to get on base.

TY In advance,
Glenn

C I was there Sunday and it was open. The boat house was also open. The base is on HPCON Charlie (substantial) so access is not an issue for valid users but it is 100% ID check Good news is fuel was 2.82 per gallon the other day

As of Wednesday may 6th it has shut down until further notice by the base general. Only essential employees and active duty are allowed on base currently. It’s really a shame for all of us who store our vessels here and utilize the ramp. Especially since most ramps are now open. The only information I received when calling the number for more details was to visit mcrd website and file an ICE comment!

The ramp being closed definitely sucks.

HOWEVER....I can (and maybe you can as well) still get on base and get to your boat if you have a CAC. Currently, No CAC equals no access as the "trusted traveler" program has been suspended for now so everyone in the car needs a CAC. Not sure about access with other types of IDs like a veteran's ID.

I've been going aboard and working on my boat everyday that I'm off.

I have my Whaler in a slip over there... need to see if I can get aboard as I haven't been there since this COVID thing started...

Thanks for the update. I was planning on launching my boat for the first time Friday and figured it was the perfect place To practice and avoid ridicule at the same time because it has limited access.

Any update on the ramp and base access for MCRD?

Ramp is still closed as of yesterday. The gate to the Marina has been closed and secured for a while now. Tenants can still access their boats with their key.

Base Access is still basically the same as it has been for a few weeks now. No escorting, everyone needs to have a CAC. They recently started asking, " Why you are coming on base?". Answering that you have a boat in storage/at the marina has seemed to be a sufficient answer for me so far.

Thank You. I'm 250 miles away and don't want to make the trip if I can't get the boat out.

They actually repaired most of the potholes just before the 'rona shutdown! Its fairly smooth now.

But yes, its a skinny single lane ramp with a surprise drop-off on the north side after the curb ends. If you drop a wheel off that side you will DEFINITELY jack something up on your boat and/or trailer. If you've never launched there before you need to step inside the boathouse and ask one of the guys to give you the lay of it. They are happy to do so as its less paperwork in the end.
