March 2020 was going great here at Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge until this COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down! We hosted 4 great groups here at our boutique island lodge 10 miles off the Pacific coast of Panama.

Our clients experieced some great fishing in our three big 33' World Cat fishing machines! The action was similar to last month. One day was stellar...and the next day a bit slow. Especially with the Tunas who were, as usual, a little finicky with the warm water temperatures offshore.

Everyday there were huge areas of Porpoises and Tunas feeding on different kinds of bait. When they're feeding on squid or flying fish, as we saw a lot of, they are moving very fast and it's real tough to get bit. Nothing is more frustrating than seeing big Tunas jumping all around the boat and not being able to hook one! But most days, with a little patience, we were able to choose between the pods of porpoises and fish that were showing a different feeding behavior and were able to get bit. We caught a bunch of really impressive Yellowfin Tunas....biggest one went over 150 pounds!

The inshore bite was unusally slow the first 12 days or so of March. Capt. Juan was able to get a couple nice Cuberas at his secret rock early in the month but other than that it was tough with all the current associated with the big tides we had. It really improved once the tides got smaller...about 4 days after the full moon passed. We released some nice Roosters in the afternoons on the way home from offshore. And one special day we released 12 Cubera Snappers all over 25 pounds, 2 Roosters, and a stud Almaco Jack!!!

Thanks so much to all of our new, and returning clients, for choosing our lodge!

Don't worry this virus hiatus will be over soon enough and we will be ready here to get back at it!

Enjoy the pics!...

Supposedly the travel ban here is going to be lifted June 22. Copa Airlines announced they will resume operations on June 26. We are in limbo here waiting to see how it all plays out regarding quarantine regulations and such.

In the interim Steve has been doing some big improvements remodeling the lodge. He completed the new 3 bed/bath guesthouse, connected and finished the foundation and roof on the new third 35kw generator, and now he's working on the bar on the beach getting the roof and structure up as well as running a trench to run the water and electric. I'll post some videos and pics of all as soon as I get out to the island.

The Panamanian government, last Friday, just pushed the goal posts forward to July 22 airport opening date. And Copa Airlines is saying August 7th before they will resume operations. I will keep posting updates as soon as we hear definite word on Panama opening up for visitors and when we will resume operations here at the lodge. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thanks!
