Kman & I fished out of FBC San Pedro on 2/17. We were on the water from 7a-2p, fishing the Horseshoe and 105 areas. It was a beautiful day of fishing but not of catching. Shorts & t-shirt weather in February! Once the fog burned off the air was 70-ish, water 60. Light wind and little current anywhere.

We moved around to dozens of different spots, ended up with only 5 sand bass, 3 sculpin, a young black sea bass, and a really stupid mantis shrimp (photo attached). All on Kman swimbaits, all released.

A note, the San Pedro gas dock (Jankovich) has finally moved to their new location a few 100 yards from the old one. Nice new building, clean bathrooms, more beer.

Yeah, they’re nasty little fuckers. Check out some videos on them things, including the one above (which is funny).

I’ve heard of them cracking fiberglass while on decks.
Damn that is gnarly. I saw the video above was hard to take serious, but funny though! I have also heard they are damn good to eat.

I probably saw you out there, was at the Horseshoe from 7am to noon. Foggy morning, thank goodness for radar. Agree on the (lack of) wind and current, fishing was tough but managed 21 mixed bass for the morning, on swimbaits and tubes. Closer to shore was working better than further away.

Had to use the trolling motor to "create" a drift as it was so calm out there.

Thanks for the report.

I tried eating them once . Unlike a regular shrimp that has one shit vein down the middle they have branches of it . Unless you have a way to hold them and purge them there not worth the trouble IMHO

Hey Bob: Thank you for the invite. Great day fishing. Catching could have been better but we’ll get them next time.

We tried to get the Mantis Shrimp to snap at a pair of pliers but the little bastard just stayed cocked—probably waiting for some skin to get near him. He was released. Carefully.

Man... I didn't know we had those suckers in our waters... For some reason I thought they were a tropical beast.

lots of them in SD bay. I thought the tail snap was the big thing, now it can punch too. Pretty bad ass really.
