At approximately 3 this afternoon the deckhand that was on the roof spotting for kelps spotted a man in the water. He yells Man Overboard! and the crew of Ocean Odyssey goes into action to perform a rescue at sea.

The 27 year old man had been freediving from his father's boat 20 miles off the coast of Mexico and somehow got separated. He had been in the water for over 4 hours and had drifted 3 miles from where he entered the water.
Saw this on 976 tuna. Guy is very lucky

A personal EPIRB or PLB might be a good idea.
The man was freediving. I doubt he’s hauling a float with a ditch bag and I doubt either would survive being 30-60’ under water.

dang PRAISE GOD! I wonder if that guy was prayin? as a free diver I can relate to the possibility that one might lose sight of the boat for a moment but another good reason to have thorough what if scenarios and safety briefings between capt and diver prior to getting in the water. IE Dad's in the boat and a massive foamer pops up 100yds away while son's swimming-never take eyes off the diver. In the Coast Guard standard MOB training is that everyone on deck points until crew is recovered.. Great great great job on the part of the deckhand he deserves a medal for that one

I spear fish with my son. He's better nowadays at not high tailing it for more promising water but 10-12 years ago, he would take off hunting and I barely had breath for anything other than kicking to keep up with him.

I wonder how it happened. Was someone supposed to do a head count, call the coast guard when unable to locate diver, captain drunk and passed out? I think it would be pretty difficult to forget your buddy is in the water 20 miles out.
