MAG BAY REPORT, AUG. 23 - Wahoo show up late

Twice over the past ten days or so I fished out of Lopez Mateos and had to settle for two straggler wahoos both times. Yesterday as the first storm of the season continued to move north up the coast I fished again for my first limit of the season in a good afternoon bite. I usually fish alone but as per current requirements in this time of disease I had along with me Captain Ruben Duran. Ruben is always good company and there is no denying that having a competent and personable capitan makes a long day on the water easier. We caught five wahoos, including a couple of double hook-ups, five small yellowfin and a nice dorado.

As part of the economic recovery of Corno Viris the Navy is
requiring that private boats use a local registered Captian or
a local registered boat and captian. From what I have seen this will continue thru this year.

We tried a variety of lures for a few hours before the hoos came in on ridge to feed, but all five were caught on Halco Laser Pros and Maxs. And, the seas did lay down nicely yesterday for the first time since Genevieve blew through.

The Baja government is shooting themselves in the hind end with the boat and captain requirements. Ruben looks like an asset to any team, but I’d want to hire him willingly, not because I’m required to. No Baja for me this year, quite a few others are going to hold off as well. If they want to get things moving again, remove the restrictions. There’ll be plenty of work for everyone when the gringos decide to come back and spend.

The Mexican people are some of the finest I’ve ever met anywhere and I’ve been quite a few places. I truly enjoy my time with the locals when in Mexico. The problem is the corrupt political class and has been since Mexico was governed by Spain. Nothings changed in 400 years and won’t anytime soon, unfortunately.

I hope the new regs do not impact anyone negatively. It will be interesting to see if the regs are lifted at the end of the year or will they go full blown "Cedros".

Freedom of choice was earned the hard way in the USA. I like my freedom to fish when and where I wish, but Local Knowledge is priceless, and locals like Ruben are money in the bank.

When we fished with Tony Reyes we always wrangled TRJ to be our guide. He made us all high liners..

In this zone locals like Ruben, Juan or even Nestor are worth bringing along for the day, especially if your staying inshore. A few bucks and you and they are golden...

Back on land sharing with the locals and their children make for more fun than catching the fish, imho.

I'm sure That Ruben will rise to the occasion. We went out again today along with Juanito who has the house on the river that Nestor lives in. We caught this fat hoo along with another just a bit smaller and a load of small yellowfin.

Vigilant 32 , You are wise beyond your years . This rule or law has been on the books for years , For the people who don't realize there is so much more at stake here than meets the eye, the near sighted American or Canadian Yes the government is corrupt here,(as they are everywhere) but they are trying to convert the net murderers to do something else . So, the Americans like pacific jigger don't come . WELL you are cutting your own throat for two reasons . #1 Yes you're not paying a captain to go out, so he has to go out that day( to feed his family) and kills indiscriminatley More Fish than you can imagine with the nets and only gets paid 7 or 8 cents per kilo (2.2 pounds) #2 You miss the real culture and sharing that comes with hiring a skipper. You nay sayers could look for years and never find the quality fishing and camaraderie we have had for years.

bullcrap........So much money is spent by all of us trailer boaters does Mexico really want to screw that up? We should have a choice in the matter not be forced.
